Schecter Basses?

My wonderful wife got me an Ibanez Crossover 6-string bass guitar for our anniversary. Wanting it to be a surprise, she kept me completely in the dark. I gave it my best try, but the narrow string spacing, etc. is just not for me. Its a beautiful instrument with a great tone, but it has to go, this dog can't learn that trick. The place she bought it sells Ibanez and Schecters, not much else. They won't do a refund, but will work out an exchange. So its either that or sell the bass outright. I know about Ibanez, but what is your experience with Schecter basses? I've never given them any consideration before. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I can supply some Schecter love here. Like you, I hadn't given them a second thought. But once I got the itch for an 8-string, they were one of the few manufacturers making them, and the only one I could find with a 5-piece neck and neck-through-body construction. The build quality is VERY good for an instrument in this price range.

only ever played one Shecter bass. Neck was a bit chunky, especially compared to an ibanez.

All in all though, great basses considering the price range. Plus they come with EMG's :)

I have a Schecter neck through riot 4 which is basically the same I think as the five string studio bass (both are 35 inch scale with the dual EMG pickups).

Totally love that bass. I did upgrade the electronics, which many do (it's also easy to do, which is perhaps related to why so many do). Great construction and feel and sound.

I've owned a couple of Stiletto 5's, one bolt on, the other a neck thru. Some of the best bang for the buck instruments out there. The neck on the Studio was just a little too thick front-to-back for me, otherwise I'd still own it.

I sure appreciate your comments. The reviews on MF and GC websites were all 5-star positive, but I'd never seen any love on TB. This led me to reason most of those reviews were from teenagers, etc and not veteran musicians. You've changed my perspective and I can't wait to play one now. Thanks!

Schecters miss the most prominent demographics here on TB, because they are (a) neither old nor American, (b) not mega-dollar coffee table basses, and (c) not cheapo mod platforms. But they are very well-made solid instruments with great bang-for-the-buck. If you find one with the feel and tone you like, it's tough to go wrong.

I also went with schecter simply because it was the best looking option in an 8 string but I was super impressed with the build quality witch is almost comparable to my spector euros that cost almost 3 times as much, it definetly has a fater neck than an Ibanez but I think it has better tone than any of the 4 Ibanez basses I have owned

I recently bought a Schecter Omen 5 and I loved it so much that I sold my Yamaha TRBX to get me another Schecter , either a similar model or something different, 5 strings as well. Wider space than in Ibanez SRs and the feel is better (IMO anyway) due to the longer scale, the strings sound very piano-like, which I really dig :) .
