Schecter - your opinions

I have a Schecter Diamond C4 that doesn't get the playing time it deserves. A beautiful, solid bass that I really like...but I have enough basses that I rotate a lot.

IMO the Schecters are among the best values on the market.

I have the stiletto studio 5, honey satin with gold hardware. I really like my bass I play in a rock band and it fits the bill nicely. The bass is heavy, so you would need a nice wide strap, the string spacing is tight, so finger style and picking are great for me, I don't consider this a slapping bass, although I have seen it done. The active pre has alot of tones for my style of playing, my main beef with this bass is the gold hardware, it has pitted over the years and doesn't look that good anymore up close, I constantly get compliments on my tone with this bass and my Hartke rig.

I had this same bass for about one week. It was just too heavy for me. I used a very good strap, but with my lower back issues, I couldn't hang.:crying:

That said, I loved it in every other aspect. I thought it sounded great. Easy to play. Pretty versatile.

Good luck,
Ed

That's strange, I've heard they're pretty light. Anyone know what the specs are on their weight?

I've heard a stingray is pretty heavy too, I'm pretty sure they're round 4.5kg.

Sorry if this shows up twice...

Schecters have a lifetime warranty to the original owner against workmanship defects, so that’s something to consider.
I have a 5 string Stiletto Elite that I picked up used just to try out a five string. Keep in mind that I’ve never owned a high-end bass when considering my opinion, but I think it sounds beautiful. It’s warm and the sustain is longer than my attention span. I’ve got the action pretty low, and the B string seems tight enough to me; however I have no basis for comparison, so take that for what you will. The only complaint I have about it is that it’s a little bit heavy (for me anyway, but again, keeping in mind that I’m a chic, it might be fine for you) because it’s a neck thru. I gave up on the five string thing though because the 35” scale is a bit much for me.
@Pilgrim: I LOVE that bass. I almost bought one for myself, but then ended up buying a house instead and never got the opportunity. If you ever want to trade it for a five string

I've been looking at upgrading to a 5string recently, and was in a shop with a sweet looking stiletto studio lefty.

So anyone own one or played one? They're a LOT cheaper than what I was looking at (EBMM Stingray).

I think for now I'll withhold telling what I'm looking for and just sound out your pros and cons on them. That way i get to see the best and worst of them rather than people just saying yes buy it or no don't.

So yeah...any quick capsule reviews? Pros or cons?

I had a Schecter once. I did not like the 2 band preamp. The ONLY way I would get another Schecter is if I got one with a 3 band preamp or if I replaced the 2 band preamp with a 3 or 4 band preamp.

I have a Stargazer and besides for my utter distaste for EMG's HZ series pickups it was an excellent value. Fit and finish are a solid A and the playability is an A+, for me at least. Pickups are soon to be replaced with SGD's Neo's.

I currently have 3 Scheters; a California Custom 5 (Killer bass), a Riot 5 (another killer bass) and a Schecter California Custom passive jazz 4 string which is every bit as good as the Fenders that I have owned. Keep in mind I have owned easily 100 basses and I consider these basses as good as most of the other basses that I have owned.

I have had my Elite 5 since around 2003...I love it...TI flats super low action..2mm B, 1mm G....a delight to play but I wasn´t too impressed with the active tone control so a year ago I took out the electronics and converted it to passive and 2 x047 caps....what a difference in sound....warm, fat growly when I want....love it to bits....wouldn´t swap it for anything.

Schecter make sweet basses, no doubt. I had the Stilleto Deluxe 5 for a while, but the tight string spacing turned out to be a deal-breaker for me. Just found it too uncomfortable to play.

Turns out that I can't play a 5 unless it has 19mm spacing. The Schecters are around 16.5 - 17mm. So if you are moving up from a standard 4 to a Schecter 5, be prepared for the tighter spacing. Best thing is to try before you buy.

If you want to sound like plastic, Schecter Studios are the way to go. If you want a nice generic bass sound with no sustain or fundamental then any other model will do. Schecters are some of the worst sounding instruments out there, in my experience. :( They are comfortable and light and look good, but that's where it ends. I hear the California made American ones are nice, but those are rare.

Just curious, what do you play normally?
