Schumann PLL

Just because they are ICs doesn't mean they are programmed. Mostly like they are analog bugs that generate the square wave, multiplier and divider functions (and probably some op-amps as well). If that's the case it would be easy to reverse engineer (as long as you can find the part numbers of the ICs). I have a feeling that circuit looks more difficult than it really because of all the switches and pots.

Honestly, I don't know how much reverse engineering needs to be done. Based on how I've heard the Schumann's functions described, I almost wonder if it's an improved version of this:

I want to say that the 4046 PLL chip in this project was also the same IC that was in the "feedback" circuit in the old Boss DF-2 (and possibly the recent Behringer clone as well).
 
Yeah, I agree. The name and function kinda suggests a phase locked loop, and the rest of the controls are at least sort of self explanitory.

While you won't get a clone without the reverse engineer, I think just putting together a PLL/multiplier/divider based pedal with some relatively similar functions would be pretty doable without too much crazy electronics knowledge. Probably tonnes of fun to play with the result regardless of the presence or lack of similarities in the final product.

I've designed and built something like this. It's not a clone, but works on the same principle. Though my build is a lot cleaner. ;)

It's not a very mysterious circuit if you know what PLL stands for.

I'm using it on a record I'm making right now, very fun and bizarre, but it's a little too unwieldy at the moment for live use. I decided I wanted to have lots of simultaneous notes, so right now it does 21 (as in, a 3-note chord times 7 octaves simultaneously), but it's kind of too much. And I'm one of those "never such thing as too much" sort of people. It can do every 12-tone interval except minor 2nd and major 7th.

So, I'm thinking I need to cut out some of the features so I'd feel safe using it at a live show and actually having some control over it. I'll post some shots and clips when it gets to a point I'd call done.

That sounds really cool. I've been acquiring parts and reading about how to put together a harmonizer-y circuit for a while now, but as always, time for that kinda thing is pretty minimal.

I'd love to see some pictures and hear any thoughts you had about putting it together or handy tweaks. especially with respect to fundamental extraction. That seems to me like the biggest hurdle to overcome. I've been looking pretty hard at octave circuits to see how its done, but in the end I figure that the worst case scenario is to lift an OC-2 ish setup.

Actually, if I get something up and running the ultimate goal is to include a switch to see if the generated pitch will work in a tracking ringmod.

FYI, they're enjoying your video over at the HCFX forum.

Some knowledgeable people over there no doubt, but I had to laugh when I read someone's post that the Deep Impact can get all the PLL tones.

First, let me say that this thing is indeed pretty sick.

But now, after years of reading about this thing, trying (and failing) to track down pure samples of what it can do and generally being mystified by this thing...well, now that the mystique isn't there anymore, it's not quite as godlike as I thought it would have been.

It still is pretty damn awesome, though...
 
Heck, it's far BETTER sounding that I thought it would be. The wackiness is something that I could actually find a use for, as opposed to most wacky pedals that only sound good in noise/experimental/non-traditional song formats.
