Scott Whitley SWB-1

Samoth, of course I can post a picture but what do you want to see? It's only a pot with a knob instead of a switch. Connection diagrams can be found on the Internet. You can change the order of the pots. I did volume, blend, tone.
Problem is that you have to be a bit inventive with the holes because the diameters are different.

It’s the being “a bit inventive with the holes” part and how everything looks with three knobs that I’m interested in. It’s not a big deal either way, but I thought it would be interesting.

This is how it looks. As you can see I changed a lot more. I gave her DiMarzio pickups, replaced all the other hardware with black stuff, made the headstock shiny black and I gave her a Noll pre-amp (hence the stacked knob).
I have mounted the blend pot on the spot of the volume pot. Had to widen the hole a little bit with a round file. Replaced the switch with the volume pot. That hole was/is too big so I made the pot a little thicker with a small plastic tube. As I said, you got to be a bit inventive ;)

Can you share which black monorail bridge you went with and how it aligned with the stock mounting holes?

The middle hole (for the string-through) can be a little bit wrong but you can correct that with a little file or you don't use the string through body.

I swung by the Chowny booth yesterday @ NAMM and met Stephen, he's a cheeky fella and shares my kinda hair style (or lack thereof) so I like the bloke. Thankfully Chowny were setup in one of the better spots where you could talk without shouting too loud and it was early enough in the day before most of the shredders were out of bed.

NAMM is a terrible/impossible place to assess instruments from a tonal perspective but I was mainly concerned with ergonomics in my quest to find a new main instrument as my aging body has some arthritic and tendinitis issues. I'm all in on short scales but wanted to find a higher quality instrument as my current main bass is a Dano Longhorn and I can't play my Sire V7 or Warwick Fretless for more than an hour with my issues right now.

Before I could get comfortable Stephen was shoving basses in my hands (somewhat rare for NAMM!) and I played the SWB-1, the SWB Pro, and the new medium scale with Aguilar electronics. The first thing I was struck by is how these don't feel like short-er scale instruments. They play like my long scales. The setup on the SWB Pro and the Medium scale were setup pretty close to where I like it and given a few minutes to tweak to my personal preferences, the SWB-1 setup would get there too. From a tonal perspective, even in the terrible acoustic environment, I like what I heard. The Aggy electronics on the medium scale were outstanding and we dialled in some crazy mid-bark.

Throughout the day I played several shorter scale instruments and SWB Pro easily had the best setup and feel so if Stephen and I can get it done he'll hopefully dropping off a SWB Pro before he heads to the airport on Monday! Hopefully he survives another two days of NAMM.

Stephen braved LA traffic and dropped the SWB Pro off this morning and several hours later, it's setup to my quirky personal specs (low action, light gauge strings, and tuned down a full step) and playing well.

I changed the strings to DR Hi Beams, dropped the action a little and adjusted the intonation and we're all good. It'll take a day or two to settle in and I'll make some minor adjustments as needed but I'm pretty happy. I'm still not sold on the Hi Beams being the right choice for this particular bass so will see how it sounds once they're broken in.

I like the EMG's more than I thought I would. I have Dimarzio Ultra J's in most of my other basses and don't usually like actives that much. The SWB Pro has a very modern but balanced/unscooped tone and I have been playing it through my usual recording channel (Aguilar ToneHammer 350 >> RME Babyface >> Ableton >> Kuassa Cerberus >> Soundtoys Rack) along with some drum tracks and it's easy to dial in an agreeable tone. It's not quite as aggressive as my old Spector was but I can get it into similar territory when playing with a pick. It seems to take effects pretty well too.

I'm not a slapper (that's what she said) but I have found myself getting completely out of character and channeling Stanley on more than one occasion already. We'll have to put a stop to that before things get out of hand :D

Howdy!
Which strings do you have? I have just gotten my fretless neck mounted and got some La Bella short scale tape wound strings but they are too short :(
I'd prefer tape wound (which I see you have!) but would be ok with some nice flat wounds if need be. Am considering some TI 32" but don't want to order without knowing they will work.

That really does look Pro. Nice!

Which strings do you have?
You need medium scale strings. I had D'Addario ETB92M. Very good, very smooth.
Than I found sound of the G-string a bit 'thin'. I bought a set La Bella 760N-M(edium) at stringsandbeyond.com. Same look and feel as the D'Addario's but a little thicker (had to file the nut) and man, wat a great sound, especially the G-string. Deep and warm. But the La Bella's E-string is 'floppy'. So now I use the La Bella set with the E-string of the D'Addario's and I'm very happy with this combination.

How does it balance on the lap? I wonder with that short lower horn? Thanks!

I currently have a short Comfort Strapp on mine but it feels about 0.5-1 inch too short so may eventually get something else for it. It naturally seems to go slightly under the horn and slightly over it.

For ergonomics, I have mine slung fairly high and the upper horn sits mid-chest just below my heart but would prefer it a little lower as mentioned.

what straps are people using with their swb1? i really like how it balances but looking for a new strap to dial it in. also are y'all bringing your strap over the upper horn or under it?

I bought a Neotech "super bass" strap. Their model names/numbers can be quite confusing, it took me quite a while to figure out which one I was actually ordering. The model number was 5601002, and I got it from Amazon.

This is my first time buying a wide neoprene strap, but it is quite a heavy bass and I wanted something comfortable. I've been very happy with it.

I bring the strap over the top of the horn and am happy with how it balances.

I was bringing it under the horn bc it seemed less obtrusive, but i feel its become problematic. bc its pulling on the underside of the horn it seems like it pivots the upper part of the bass away from the body and I've noticed my elbow starting to get sore...im thinking its because I'm having to reach out over the body if that makes any sense
