Sealed Crossfiring 6x10 build

Also note, filtering in different spots, you'll have a little response rise where they overlap, in this case, 500-2khz. Not very much adding 2 drivers to 6, just a little. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. Leave a db or so bump in the bottom of the beta's would actually make the whole system more level.

Little nitpicky stuff there.

Considering that the top two drivers each 2.5lbs, the front baffle and bracing will be 3/4", the rest will be 1/2", it shouldn't be more than 100lbs. Same as the berg, possible lighter but probably not.

It looks like the frequency response of the cab will look roughly like the eminence delta 12a driver. Roughly. That is a good sound for a p-bass. Don will probably start the cab in two weeks. I'll need to talk to Ralf about the custom crossover. This cab is going to rock.:)

Im not there yet but, still experimenting. I use the dsp in the crown xti2000 amp to do my experiments. I generally like the sound of 12db butterworth low and hi-pass filters and may suggest that to Ralf but, will ultimately go with his decision. I haven't contacted him yet. Last night I experimented with low-passing the betas at 2khz and the jensen c8r hi-passed at 500 and 800hz. The C10R arrives today. I found that lowpassing the betas took away some of the character and growl so, I may leave them full range. Im still experimenting anyway so, that fine detail is up in the air. I think that adding just alittle more internal volume is going to improve the sound as far as smoothing out the low mid bump. After talking with Don yesterday, I think that we will go with 1/2" plywood for the cab except for the front baffle and bracing. The cab will definitely come in under 100lbs. Im good with anything under 100lbs. I have high hopes for these C10R drivers. They look to have the same rough characteristics of the C8R with alittle more sparkle up top and flatter response from 2k to 5k which goes a long way to get a bright sound without clack. Im betting that my eq will be set flat with this cab. It will have my sound baked in from the word go. :hyper:

100 Lbs is still pretty high... I built a cab with 1/2 inch except baffle in a "no compromise" build overall its was 22 kgs (about 50 Lbs). Having said that, I still want it lighter, I figured 3/8" (9mm ish) is a good compromise thickness, with a 1/2" baffle but don't forget to brace it properly. A loose panel does radiate significant noise....

I have had good results with 9mm standard ply (7 ply) even on large areas. Provided it is void free it works well. Better than 5 ply though. Avoid it unless you are just building a prototype.

It looks like I'll be using a pair of C8R 8" mids. I can't say they are the best overall mids, even though they are my favorite. They just have some kind of synergy happening with the betas that just works really well for me. The beta's will most likely be run full range as, alittle bit of the grind is lost without those high frequencies coming through them. I have found that no matter what the frequency response of a driver is, the size of each one determines some of it's character. 6" mids sound good but almost alittle "hard" or can have a certain "gank" to them unless their response is scooped to begin with, like the faital pro used in the baer cabs. 8's sound rounder with less gank with the same type of frequency response. 10's sound even rounder but can end up sounding too soft when used as a mid, or worse yet, have a clank to them. I've spent a pile of money trying different drivers and for me, 8" drivers tend to sit between a pa style mid and a guitar speaker. They get alittle bit of each's sound which is where the sweet spot is for me. Except for some old peavey's, I've never heard an 8" that I totally hated. I've really disliked most 6" and found many 10's to sound either too dull, too harsh or too washed out in the top end to be just right on their own. Some pretty subjective terms being thrown around here, I know. I feel that by going with 8's, I'll shave alittle size off this cab, have a sound that I know works well everywhere and be able to experiment with other 8's later if I get bored. If I wanted to go from the guitar speaker sound to a more mainstream 2-way bass sound, I could pop in a pair of faital 8fe200 drivers and be done. Thanks for following and your input guys. When the cab is finally built, I will post my review and pics in this thread to keep all of this information and opinions together.

That is the key. Contrary to popular opinion, it is not about the best woofer or the best mid or the best tweet or the best box or the best crossover. It is about the best synergy, and that is discovered mostly the old-fashioned way.

Good choices are the product of wisdom; wisdom is the product of experience; and experience is the product of bad choices. (This concept applies beyond the world of bass cab design, believe it or not.)

+1!!!!!! I got that last part down cold :)

Another great combination with synergy is B810 drivers with some jensen mod10-50 drivers. I love that combo but didn't like the mod10-50's paired with betas so much. Judging from the specs and frequency response charts alone, I have put together combinations that never sounded as good as some of my "accidents". I really thought the C10R jensen was going to be my go to for top end on this new cab. The C8R had the synergy though. I should be finalizing everything with Don today or early next week and have the cab sometime near june with a full review. I'll have to get a good cover from tuki. The one that I got for my nv610 handles abuse so darn well.

This powerfully truthful statement form one of the most honest and respected TB members is worthy of repetition, IMO.
