seeking a good band-on-tour documentary

That’s because a realistic depiction would be incredibly boring.

…unless spending ten hours crammed into a minivan to carry heavy gear into a Moose Lodge with just enough time for a bandwich before your show is entertaining.

+1. Great post. That said, I drove the Equipment truck. That was for the most part better than riding in a van.

One exception. Our truck broke down ( tossed a valve push rod off the rocker) about an hour and a half from or gig in central West Virginia. We called the club owner to let him know, and he said not to worry, he’d hop over with his pickup and give us a tow with his new pickup he bought for hauling cows by trailer to the auction.

He shows up in his pickup and pulls out a 6ft tow chain. So with about 70 miles of mountain highway to travel, we proceed up this mountain, every thing was great. Until we started heading down the other side. With no engine, there is power assist for the brakes or power steering. Trying to maintain zero slack in the chain going down hill at 70 mph and around bends with 6 feet of clearance was needless to say a very intense situation.

Needless to say by the time we got to the club, I totally drained, shook to the rafters and Pissed beyond repair. As I got out of the truck the owner came up with a proud smile and said “ what’s the matter Davey. You look a litt’l rattled. I slugged him square in the jaw.

Of course I was weighing in at about 125 lbs at the time, my arm were dead tired form pulling against the steering wheel to get enough push on the break pedal to keep from running him off the road, so that punch didn’t have much oomph. Afterwards he took me the bar, plied me with a Dickey and coke and we had a good laugh about it.

Made for 70’s TV.. Just put Jerry Reid in the drivers seat…

There is an indie life on the road band-in-van movie that I saw that was very good (and funny) but I cant remember the title. If I do, I will edit this post

In the meanwhile: Driver 23 !!!! trailer Below...The followup movie Atlas Moth wasnt as good....

Eight Days a Week
Yeah…no. While that might have been a romanticized comedic fantasy based on real events, they had already “made it” in the UK, not exactly slogging it to sucess. That era would be Backbeat, but as a fictionalized, stylized account, I would take that with a grain of salt.
For a real account of a band with a measure of success but still dealing with the doldrums of the road, I’d check out those other guys…

I experienced a snippet of tour life shortly after college. Left from Boston, played NYC, on to somewhere in south Jersey, and ended in Virginia somewhere, then drove all the way back to Boston. No audiences at any of the venues. It was then that I decided I would never tour. One-nighters and quick turnaround fly dates, sure. But extended road weeks? No way. That means I don't really stand a chance of playing for original acts. Oh well, don't really care. It's all cover music if I didn't actually write it.

You might like Bad News Tour -- like a lower budget British Spinal Tap.

Never really toured as a musician, I toured as a roadie in my late teens ... parts of it were fun, most of it wasn't.

The King Crimson at 50 documentary is ... I have no words, but Fripp is certainly an odd little man.
