I received a call this afternoon, whilst Jezebel was on the operating-table...

The good Dr.Petersen said the patient was being prepped for surgery and confirmed that 2 stacked knobs and a switch would be the result of the delicate operation.

The patient's surgery is expected to be completed today but she will need time to recuperate before being discharged Tuesday lunchtime. I have been asked to phone on Monday to check the patient will be well enough to leave as scheduled.

Just a quick update on my Sei 7...

Martin has installed the Schack pre and, as a result, had to change the control layout as I only had the volume pot before. So now the bass has 2 stacked knobs and a really tiny little switch for the LED's. As usual, it's a impressively neat job and doesn't spoil the looks of the bass at all. I will post pics when the camera's charged up again.

Sounds-wise, well how should I put it.... IT'S BLINKIN' MARVELLOUS !!.

Geez, it's absolutely changed the bass. It's now growly and has a real grit to the sound. Even using the bass, mid & treble to extremes still creates usable sounds, but it's when it's used subtly that you get the biggest payoff.

This pre just takes the sound of the bass and enhances it. Adding a small amount of bass strengthens the bottom end, mid gives a little more attack and treble can give a little high-end sparkle. You can really mould the sound you need from very small adjustments.

I am delighted with the results, but I'm also pleased that I tried the all-passive route for a while before changing. If I went this way in the beginning, I'd always wonder "what if I went passive". This way I've tried, found it wasn't quite suitable for me and then went active. I don't know how this sounds in comparison to other circuits, but I'm real happy living with a Schack.

Spent the first few days of this year trying to get all the small jobs done that I've been meaning to do for a while. Got a couple of those weedy 6 string things back making a noise again and I have some more room to work in after having a major clear-up.

Now I have room to swing a cat (if I had one) :hiding:

HI dudes,

Well the waiting continues - and to be fair when I was doing my Tax return (all done and paid amazingly) I noticed my deposit for the Sei was paid on the 1st of March. So by rights my bass is still on schedule - though the pain of it having to go back to the finishers because of a couple of minor (but major) imperfections on the finish is a bit gutting. More so because I missed it by a day when it was in the shop last December, so I haven't seen her yet - but they all said it's a stunner!

I spent part of my crimbo hols working on my playing and getting to know Ableton Live 5 - I got a 'free' version but it's really great and I made a couple tunes - as my fretless custom still sounds and plays beautiful - have a a listen:

+1. Happy New Year to all. Now about that progress update:

  • Kevin, your macassar / oil slick bass presumably must be almost finished now?
  • HPM, what progress re your bass? I saw a very nice Thuya burl compartment cover on the side the other day at SEI HQ and wondered whether it was yours!
  • Juan King, what news? It was ordered back in May last year, so I would expect there to be some progress to see!
  • Big Red X, any news to report?
  • Notrc, what happened re the electrics in your SEI bass?
As for me, I may well have some news but will tell all when Martin gets back from NAMM in a couple of weeks or so…:ninja:

Good evening to all, and belated holiday greetings.

I am having the electronics completely redone as I write this. John Thurston out of the Catonsville, MD area is doing it for me.

In terms of the wiring, what I had was so far "off" the mark as to be laughable...but the instrument sounded really good in spite of it.

With luck, I will end up with what I was supposed to have in the first place; i.e., seperate volume/passive tone controls for each pickup; active bass/mid/treble controls for the Schack preamp; mini toggle switches for active/passive, and single/series/parallel coil taps for each pickup.

She should be done and back to me by this time next week.

I will keep you posted.

Hi all,

Sorry to have been off the update radar for a while. The main reason for that, besides the usual Xmas mania is that there really is no news to tell. Last I heard, which was from an e-mail from Alex in early Dec, is that although work is being done, there is nothing to see as of yet. If anyone can take a guess at which stage it might be at, I'd be grateful. :D It was ordered on the 1st of May - 8½ months ago. I am currently seriously considering LEDs on the side of the neck, and have been told that the bass may have to be sent elsewhere to have my logo added. I haven't heard where or how much it'll cost yet.

Nothing to report since my last post with the laminated neck. Hopefully I'll be in London some time in Feb so I'll be in the Gallery to check on progress. Still got to decide on pickups...

Hey all,
Hope everyone is well.

sei24bass, Noting to report I'm afraid. I went to see my bass last October (more or less on the year since ordering) just before it went to the finishers. Shortly after that I changed my p/up spec from Bartolinis to fat stacks and that is the last contact I had.

I must admit that I can't remember the last time I played either of my sei.s. I really like the 5 string but it has a very noisy volume/led push pull control which I have to get sorted. The 4 string headless will never be played because I just don't like headless instruments (don't ask me why I bought it because I don't know - it is in the reject pile with my Warwicks now).

I only play my Rickenbacker and Fender Jazzes now.

I am really hoping that my enthusiasm returns once I get the call. It's going to be a very expensive mistake otherwise.
