As soon as there's the hint of some sunshine I'll be taking the bass in to work so I can get some better pictures at some point during the day.

I guess I can take the (w) off my sig now?

Thank goodness for Pierreganseman and a broken ankle...otherwise I might have done something very silly re the oil slick.

BigRedX - Your bass is still for me one of the best looking fretless basses I've seen...just stunning!

Thanks for asking. The ankle is getting there...out of plaster after 6 weeks but at least a further 6-8 weeks of ankle 'mobilisation' (a.k.a physio and pain) before I'm walking unaided. No reason why I should not get fully back to normal again, so no complaints. Really looking forward to playing in church again though.

Reminds me about Paddy's wrist...what's the latest Paddy?

Good point about waiting for a SEI bass...no update re the SEI 9 at the moment (I need to give Martin a call). I think a trip to The Gallery could be a good test for whether I could start commuting to work again! :D

Once again thanks everyone for the comments on the bass.

First rehearsal with it on Wednesday. Looking forward to hearing it loud through my rig and how it fits in with rest of the band. Playing along with our demo at home it has all the right ingredients sound wise - plenty of oomph (that's a technical term) on the low notes and the high notes sing through.

Kevin!!! - only seems like yesterday you picked the slick up!! Sorry you had to sell up mate...

pierreganseman - you got a good bass there, PM me for a membership number. It just helps me keep track. So you got one on order and the 'slick'. Good times :)

BigRedX - We got to think of a nickname for that beauty - very nice :hyper:. Got to check out this ramp thing as well. I know Mike likes his - how do you find them?

Sei24Bass - thanks for the posting on the frequency settings type things - I'm going to have some playing around with that - ta very much...

Talking of nicknames - Maybe we need to think up some names for our basses. We got 'The Slick', 'Rampant Rabbit', 'Jezabel' - what you all think?

Glad your up and about (even with a stick from the sounds of it) Sei24Bass - just don't do too much too soon!

Me, I'm doing ok - got a checkup on the wrist in a weeks time. Hoping he doesn't want to take the pins out!!! It feels ok, is load bearing and I can do pretty much all I want so I say leave well alone...

Couldn't that be Alice Cooper?? :D

I never really thought about giving the SEI 8 a name, I guess partly because I'm not that way inclined and partly because of the unique nature of the bass. Having said all that I did rather like what I think the late Adrian Garcia once called one of his basses, 'Grace' because of the amazing grace of the lord Jesus Christ...

As for the SEI 9...The King? :ninja::hiding::ninja::hiding:

I seem to recognise that advice from somewhere...:D Thanks for reminding me though, as it is all to easy to over do things and I have heard of several people managing to break the same ankle a second time. :hmm:

Really good to hear about your wrist, especially given the initial prognosis you were given. I suspect they will not take the pins out unless you are having trouble with them. My ankle now has a plate, bolts and screws, all of which I have been told will stay in for the rest of my life unless I have problems. Apparently it is not too difficult a process to remove them and it takes a relatively short time to recover (days rather than weeks).

Anyway, this is supposed to be bass forum not a hospital help line...so what names do you have for your 2 SEI basses?

I have a question for the more technically minded of you out there.

Although I love my Sei, I am having a problem with it. I'm not sure whether it's the p/ups/pre-amp/action etc... but I'm not getting an equal response from all my strings. Whilst my E string sounds great, the G string is barely audible in comparison. In order to get anything like evenness across the string I need to turn the compression right up which is something I hate doing.

Any ideas on what I could do to rectify this? I think the truss rod is fine but am sometimes finding that the higher string choke a bit when playing them loudly which means to me that the action is too low. I haven't touched it since Martin gave it to me, should I take it back to him?

I am by no means a techie bloke - just ask Martin!!

I'm the bloke that tried to fix a scratchy volume pot in his brand new Sei by dumping a lot of pot cleaner into the compartment. Not only are the pots sealed units so no cleaner could get in but I managed to fry some of the LED contacts or something. Martin was impressed when I went crying back to HQ :hyper:

I remember the neck in my fretted moved about quite a lot in the first few months when i got it despite the carbon rods. Funny enough the fretless less so. This movement is to be expected as everything settles down. Now my babies have settled the necks don't move at all - rods help I think.

You changed string gauge? Sounds like a setup could be in order to tweak things.

Juan_King, is this a problem that has been there from the start or has it just come on? Also can you remind us what pickups / electrics you have on your bass?

Several thoughts I've had include:
  • Have you changed anything recently that might be a contributable cause (e.g. changed instrument lead)?
  • Have you tried changing the battery on the bass? On some pre-amps the treble seems to go first when the battery is on its last legs...
  • Is the treble turned down on either the bass or the amp? Sounds stupid but I once spent a good half an hour checking leads, fuses etc why my amp was not working and I simply had forgotten to turn the blighter on...
  • Do you get the same trouble with a completely different amplification (e.g. practice amp or with headphones)? If so it is likely to be the bass, otherwise it might be something with the amp (not sure what) or the speakers (e.g. blown tweeter/horn);
  • is the height of the pickup(s) much lower on the treble side than the bass? Unlikely as martin typically sets most pickups evenly across all strings, but you can adjust the height using the screws either side of the pickup(s);
  • Do you have a passive option on your bass and if so do you get the same issue in both passive & active mode? If it affects just the active mode, I would start to suspect either the pre-amp or more likely the wiring / soldering to the treble control. If it affects both passive & active (or if you have no passive option) move onto the next thought...
  • If you have 2 pickups, does the lack of treble affect both pickups? If only one pickup is affected I wonder whether it is either a faulty coil in the pickup (provided it's not a single coil) or possibly a dry soldering joint (unlikely as Martin is usually pretty good with a soldering iron).

Whilst tweaking the truss rod / saddle heights will help the treble strings being choked when playing loud, it will have no affect on the lack of output from the treble strings. Truss rod tweaks are sometimes needed from time to time due to changes in temperature / humidity etc, especially if you are fussy about your playing action (like me).

Let us know what the answers are to these thoughts above. Either way it unfortunately sounds like it might be a visit to The Gallery unless you are confident / handy with a soldering iron.

Hey mate the gig the otherday I did with you the bass sounded really good I would say you strings could be a little heigher as you play quite hard but your trust rod is perfect also when I played your bass your string were really dead maybe you need to just change string I should be booking to see martin soon so if you want me to take your bass up I can do it

Hi!

Thank you muchly for your help. It doesn't seem to be a pickup problem as it happens whichever setting i have it on. After a bit of fiddling around I've discovered that it happens pretty much exclusively on the D & G strings, so I'm sure it s a setup issue.

Mark, let me know when you're going up and I may well drop it off to you if that's ok. I have a gig at Shepherds Bush Empire in about a month I'd really like to have it perfect for!
