Nice one dude - I added a new vid yesterday with me doing more jazzy noodling with the lovely jazz tone on my Single Cut... I have some more Sei news soon - like later today.

OK yes I tease - I just ordered my new Sei... a 4 string jazz.

the specs are:

4 string
24 fret maple neck
Birdseye maple fingerboard
Ash body
Absolutely stunning American spalted maple top
Ramp with top wood on it
Red LEDs along top side of finger board.
Abalone markers on the board
Black hardware
Bridge TBC
Electronics TBC
Hipshot D-tuner
Full facing on the headstock

I've always wanted a jazz and I think Martin will make me a real beauty. The top wood is unbelievable and I know it's gonna be amazing. The other thing is I'm looking for recommendations re the pups and circuit - but I am leaning towards a John East - and apparently the Fender custom shop Jazz pups are great... but hey I don't need to really worry about that stuff until next spring. What a lovely problem to have...

And - my vintage Thumb Bass sold in the last week or so - so the deposit was all covered too ... sweeet!

cool stuff Mike - some neat stuff going on as opposed to my screw-ups and effects covering everything :cool:

Think I'll get to work at the weekend and try tidying it up a bit - it's a bit messy and the timings pretty poor in places. Just wanted to try some things out and finally come out from behind the sofa and get online.

A jazz eh - Complete with Ramp - you do like those don't you lol! Martin's take on the Sei seems to getting more popular - not my bag but can't think of anyone better to build one. You get any pics of the facings while you ordered? I shall be following with interest... :bassist:

that sounds great mike, i have the east 3 band pre in my fender geddy lee jazz and it did so much for the tone of that bass, i got the one that had the passive tone pot on it and i use that loads. i really cant recomend that pre enough.

as for pickups, i would straight think about a set of nordstrand single coils, but thats just me.

Nice one Dave - yes I'm getting lots of suggestions re the ACG/East pre and I think that's what I will go for - re pups the Fender Customs are also single coils so either them or the Nordys will probably do the job. I'm really excited about this bass - it will be great to have a good ole 4 string as well - so I'll be able to let my thumb fly without worrying about the B string!

Mike, really pleased for you...nothing like going back to the "simplicity" of a 4 string! I'm intrigued with the facings and wonder whether your 4 and my 9 string are related! I found a truly exceptional piece of spalted silver maple for the SEI 9, which Martin and I had carefully cut in order to have a single unused bookmatched facing left. In fact that facing was amongst the best from that wood, but I did not use it for the SEI 9 as the facings for this bass need to be unusually thick (6mm thick rather than the standard 4mm thick). I spoke with Martin on Thursday and he said you were coming in, were after some spalted maple and could he use this remaining spalted facing...

Not much news re the SEI 9, except that the bubinga fretboard is now cut. The spalted bubinga I sourced unfortunately had one or two internal defects (that’s wood for you...), but Martin was still able to create a wonderful two tone quilted bubinga fretboard out of it (single piece of wood rather than bookmatched as originally planned). Should be getting to the fast moving exciting part of the build very soon now...:hyper:

Sounds very very interesting, when you say all black, will it be painted with an ebony board? or are you using dyed black wood etc.

Also being nosy, what pickup will you be going for. I ask because I have a single p/u 7 string with a custom kent armstrong and it is simply wonderful, so I thoroughly approve of the single p/u route:hyper:

yep. high glosss black all over. black hardware. single pickup, passive, 24 frets (no dots) through body stringing with bolt on graphite reinforced neck.

though im asking if they can do a custom shaped headstock for me :hiding:

I'm not sure whether you will convince Martin re the custom headstock, but its always worth a try...let us know how you get on!

ive asked for just and ash body and a single MM bartolini pickup.

yeah i dont like their headstocks...just quietly. i would like to get a headstock similar to an Aria SB, Integra or Modulus style. something a little more symetrical and shorter.

I've had mine since last year. I wanted one since 1990-something when I first read about them in Guitarist magazine, but by a weird turn of fate (long story) I placed the order in 2006 and the bass (which my wife has named 'Jezebel'!) took very nearly a year to be completed.

It is my absolute pride and joy !! There's a link to the build thread in my signature, but here's a couple of photos of the finished article. I have had more photos taken though and they should be with my at the end of the month. Needless to say I'll post them when I have them :D
