No chance, every SEI basses look gorgeous as far as I'm concerned and yours will be no exception...different but every bit as tasty as all the others!

I've had my current singlecut 5 since 2003 (and still love it - with age, the high registers have taken on a "fretless" quality!), and, before that, I had a Flamboyant 4-string with Lane Poors, ziricote facings and red front and side LEDs in 1999. I sold that one back to The Gallery - I wonder where it ended up? Wouldn't mind having it back!

Still pondering another - it's a toss-up between a 5-string Jazz and another Flamboyant. Once I decide (and, of course, once I'm back on the other side of the Atlantic) I'll be straight down to The Gallery!

Oh, Mike, nice meeting you up there a few weeks back - your singlecut 5 is amazing! :D

Hi Russ

Yeah it was great finally meeting 'one of the family' - glad you liked my bass, I think it was your 5 string SC that got me first interested (and lusting after) one myself!

No idea if you read my earlier post but since I saw you I've ordered a Sei Jazz 4 string - I'm really hankering for a four banger plank to spank... but I'm obviously still loving my SC more each day. A wonderful bass that just keeps getting better - I really feel I have no limitations now and it's down to practice and playing lots. Yippee!

Drop me a line when you are next over - a beer or two would be good.

Which makes me think a Sei owners bash would be great - but who wants to organise it? I'm seriously busy so not me - and it doesn't have to be in London.... probably shouldn't even mention it. ;)

Hi guys

Just a quick update on the Jazz that's on order and just started to get ff the starting blocks. Seems like there have been qite a few Sei Jazz's ordered recently - John Currie's got one that's taking shape nicely with dark green Buckeye facings on front and back - it's a through neck as well. I also played one martin had just finished which was lovely which is white with a tortoiseshell scratch plate on - and John was shaping the body for yet another one... but I know there are a couple more single cuts and an offset Flamboyant on the cards as well... so it's busy as usual at Sei HQ.

Right well a small but important update on mine - see the beautiful spalted maple top below - this is actually the back of the facings, I used photoshop to reverse it so it doesn't look like a 'leftie'. Bear in mind this is the wood in its roughest state, so post varnish it's going to be jaw dropping. Martin said he's going to get the body cut out and get the neck in production soon and we're going to nail a few specifics next week regarding the neck and pickups abd things like that.

Anyway - enjoy this snap - it'll be a while before there's any more shots...

Matthew & Cliff - Thanks for the comments about the Sei 8. It's funny how we rather like each other's basses and I've always been a sucker for your 7 string fretted...so simple, so elegant, just beautiful. As for your basses Clliff, they are truly beautiful (soft spot for the parallel chamber model) and I'm forever checking out your "The News" page...regular panacea whilst I wait for my new Sei!

Pierreganseman, I've never found the waiting easy for any of my Sei basses. Fine if you are good at forgetting about it and turning your mind to other things, but I'm no good at that :mad: Therefore I adopt the alternative approach of immersing myself in the finer details (pickups, electrics etc) and regularly checking out progress pictures of other custom built bass in the hope that time might just tick away a bit faster! :rollno:

Mike, really like the facings for your Jazz 4 string and definitely not the same as those for the SEI 9!

i saw this at the gallery on thursday, it was already glued to the body and Johnny was almost done with the shaping when i left.

it looks amazing already, that is gonna be one damn nice looking bass when its finished

Hi Guys,

All the new basses look amazing! Can't wait to see the finished articles. I recently gigged mine at Shepherds Bush Empire - there's a photo of it here Link Removed if you're interested..

I am also having a small problem with the Sei... I recently changed the strings and noticed afterwards that the A-string machine-head was really buzzing and rattling afterwards. Upon closer inspection I found that the two halves of it had unscrewed. I'm having trouble getting them back together again as the headstock seems to be marginally too thick for the screw to bite. I completely accept that with a custom made bass, these things are likely to happen and that is half the beauty of a handmade bass for me. However, the buzzing is something I'd like to get fixed but not sure the best way to go about it. Do you think Martin could maybe thin out the headstock slightly? Or maybe Gotoh make machine-heads that have the screw going further up the post?

Any thoughts would be great!

Wow - thanks for the update Dave - I'm so looking forward to this bass (all in good time obviously!).

Nice to hear the bits of news - Juan sorry to hear you are having a little issue with your bass I'm sure it's something Martin could sort out if you can get back to see him.

Cool news about Pino keeping the faith too and ordering a new beasty - I'm sure that will be lovely too...

My little bit of Sei news was I just did another recording session with this really exciting singer called Paula Rae Gibson with the SC and it rocked... the music is in the Roisin Murphy/Goldfrapp area but with cool Massive Attack style grooves that cover funk, rock and quite a lot of dancey grooves. So lots of opportunities to explore different sounds from the bass - so I went for the full range from deep warm finger style, to glassy slap (with the piezzo on a touch, sounds amazing), to honking wah-finger style - all with the bass going direct. I tell you it just kills it in the studio - so there you go.

Anyway keep us updated y'all - hope the old Credit Crunch isn't getting you down too much (I'm happy...) see y'all soon.

I would speak to Martin about it to see what he suggests, however I would also check that the tuning peg is seated properly with no grit, dirt whatever, causing the problem. Martin is usually meticulous in these matters but if it is nothing obvious and I know you have already had a look, I would give him a ring.

Facings on the Sei 8 are Thuya burl. It can be quite hard to find pieces big enough, but Martin has a supply!

Aiden, I also suggest you give Martin a call re the machinehead. By the way did you manage to sort out that issue you had with the rather quiete top strings?

Hi,

Thank you for the advice, I've sent Martin an e-mail to see what he thinks.

I've put the quiet top strings down to an EQ issue I think. I just need to be more careful with how much bottom end I'm dialling in... Although I love making the walls shake it does get to be a bit overpowering! The change of strings seems to have helped a lot too...

Tomorrow i'll be the proud new owner of the sei jazz they have at the gallery!! (used one with red pickguard) Whouhouh!! My alembic is getting sold for that:crying:!! But jeeez!! the sei is a nice jazz bass!!:hyper: bart pups, and epro pre amp.. sound great. Very sensitive to anything you change!!
