And - while I have the team's attention - is there anything one can do to protect the back of the bass? I anticipate mine will have a matching back, and seeing how well Matthew has kept his made me wonder whether there are any tricks.

My trick is to only play wearing soft clothes so no belts or buckles, jeans studs always covered by a shirt or t shirt etc etc.

I know it is a bit anal but it keeps the back clean. Also no rings so the neck wont get damaged and lastly no dangly braclets on the right hand so no damage to the body by the strings.

I have the same rules if I let someone else play them.

Of course now that the fretted is at The Gallery to be sold I have lost control of the situation.

It is a trick of the light, mores the pity, as I think it looks quite nice. I know you can get different coloured strings so maybe it wouldn't be totally impossible to make strings like in the photo.

I'm got to the order stage of a Flamboyant 6er and I'm wondering about scale length.

All the conventional wisdom is that a 35" neck is a must to avoid a flappy B string. But a 34" neck (which is what I'm used to, albeit on a 4-string) seems to be pretty much the default chez Peterson.

The only reason I'd have wanted a 35" neck would have been to ensure a punchy B. Apart from that, I'd be happy with a 34".

Anybody experienced any lack on a 34"? Or any comments?

I have a 34" scale Sei and no problems with the low B at all.

The bass just plays unbelievably well and I haven't found the B lacking in anything. It's a heck of an instrument to own.

Just as an aside, I'm being good and keeping my New Year's resolution to record more. The Sei sounds really big and fat in the mix, a bit like a huge pillow for the rest of the instruments to sit on. That was only a first go as well, just using a compressor and nothing else. Looking forward to getting more sounds from the bass as I get better with Cubase.

As another question to throw out to the S.O.C. as well as yours, what preamp (if anything) do you use for recording your Seis??

Flaneur, firstly a very warm welcome and please provide us with the details of the flamboyant 6 string you have on order. As for scale length, I would go with Martin's suggestion because there are a myriad of differing and sometimes conflicting opinions. My own view (FWIW) is that whilst a 35" scale length does slightly increase both the tension and clarity of the low B string, it is not mandatory for a good B string on a Sei bass and may not fit with your required sonic objectives. My SEI 8 is a 35" scale length because it has a low F# string and both clarity & depth were critical sonic objectives for this bass. Conversely the SEI 9 has a 34" scale length because it only goes down to a B and the sonic objectives for this bass are very different to the SEI 8.

Details: weeell, 34" (!) neck, 2 bartolinis, ebony fretted fingerboard, spalted or buckeye maple front and back. There was a plan to go to London to look at Martin's wood pile but circs got in the way and I'm hoping to do it by email etc. Electronics - who knows? That really will mean a trip to London.

You chaps near London are so lucky, just being able to pop in and have a look at your baby being built!

7string and s24b, thank you for your advice and the welcome.

I looked at the Gallery website and saw that my 7 had been removed from the for sale list.

It's quite poppy radio 2 stuff and good no-brainer fun stuff to play. We're off to play the South By Southwest festival in Austin TX in March with a gig in NY to warm up. Has anyone been to SXSW? What can I expect??

Just wanted to post an observation... I've owned my Sei singlecut 5 for nearly six years now, and it still never fails to put a smile on my face.

The bass has the most amazing tone, and it just gets better with age. It feels like the neck has finally "settled" into the perfect action, and, if anything, the amount of "growl" has increased over the years - the upper registers now have an almost fretless quality. The bass has been over the Atlantic and back several times, and yes, it's picked up a couple of little bruises along the way, but, overall, it's been a bass that just keeps on giving. :)
