Andy, welcome and you have bagged yourself a wonderful bass. Martin makes a mean fretless bass and that one did the rare trick of making me really think about buying it. I think you will have a lot of fun with that one...
Mike, liking your bass, especially the fingerboard and the new headstock design. Very tasty! Makes me all the more impatient for the SEI 9, but progress has slowed somewhat with that one at the moment (stuck trying to sort out LED colours) and now Martin has gone on holiday for a couple of weeks!
Sorry, I forgot to suggest a couple of pre-amps. The Nordstrand pickups you have selected apparently are suited to finger style playing, with a slightly muted top end. Therefore for pre-amps I wondered about Sadowski, Nordstrand, Demeter, Glockenklang (wonderfully clear, clean & neutral) or possibly Bartolini or even Audere. I suspect you have tried them all, but just a few suggestions...

That sei jazz that used to belong to paul turner! it's a great intrument, and the sound works for evrything cuz------>jazz bass!

Yup, it's a fantastic instrument and I'm thoroughly enjoying playing it. There's just so many things that you can do on a 9, so many roads to go down.
Coming from the 7, the extra 2 strings aren't really a problem. I had some problems initially getting both hands on the same string at the same time, but that seems to have solved itself. I still haven't got around to playing with the preamp yet as the bass sounds great with everything set flat. The action is really, really low and as the basic 4 string set is lighter than what I would use normally, I can really fly around on the 9 with less effort.
However, none of this takes away from my Sei 7, in fact it's made me look at it in a different way.
As the 9 is physically bigger and a little heavier, the 7 feels much smaller in comparison. It's the same as going from a 6 to a 4; play the 6 for a while and a 4 feels tiny. As a result, I find myself playing the 7 more aggressively and flinging it about more. The neck on the Sei is just exquisite and the workmanship is flawless (as seen in the thru-neck disappearing under the rear facings).

I similarly found the issue of co-ordinating both hands on the same strings went away quite quickly when I got the SEI 8 (previously used a 5 string). The bigger issue was string muting, which I still find myself having to work on at times (why Ive gone for a hidden bass / full range switch on the SEI 9). How have you found string muting on the ACG?
Interestingly I agree that it is the necks along with Martins artistic flair that make SEI basses really stand out compared to so many other bass builders for me. His basses feel so wonderfully sculptured, reassuringly solid yet elegantly crafted to ensure nothing detracts from the process of making music.

Er ... vinyl rear facing. Or is it hide?

I know, it's unreal. I don't really it when you see the neck-thru body, so I asked for the full rear facings.

7String, not really that cunning, just a simple blatant copy of the very same switch that is on your bass and also on the bass that poor Matthew's just sold. The only difference is that I am asking for it to be wired so that hopefully it will select either just the lowest 4/5 strings or all 9 of them (and even that idea I knicked from THSL's 12 string bass). I'm clearly not very good at the original thought thing...
Pierre, I meant to post that John I think is still working away in the SEI 'factory', so there may still be some progress on your bass whilst Martin is away. Give him a call, but be patient as they will be a little busy / stretched whilst Martin is away.
I was thinking that you might have been muting the bottom strings when you play the top ones. It's a great idea, especially when coupled with the James Bond-esque button.
The only problem I've had with Jezebel is that button. I've had times where I've pressed the button and the whole thing disappears into the cavity. I spoke to Martin about it and I was able to perform the surgery at home with some forceps (tweezers), a cloth (for my sweating brow) and some cyanoacrylate (superglue).
Haven't had a single problem since.

Bart pups and Schack pre
And, I think, burl maple facing but I'm not too sure.
All in all, a fantastic instrument.

Jmanfunk, very warm welcome and what a lovely SEI you have. I particularly like both the maple/ebony neck and the contrasting colours of the body and the facings. Very tasty indeed.

The Original shape Sei is seriously underrated, I reckon. My next one will probably be an Original, whenever I get around to it.
Got a whole spec worked out, just need to arrange to go and see Martin whenever I'm back in the UK and have the deposit together.
I think the main reason I'll be going for the Original design is the sheer compactness of it - I want a light bass next time. That's the only downside of my current 5-string singlecut - it's bloody heavy.
