I did a bit of wheeling and dealing and I've now got a Fender '51 Reissue. After I got the bass, I found it needed some fretwork and was really in need of a setup...

Put the '51 next to Jezebel and that's how far the electric bass has come in just 52 years..

Hey Howie, does that Buckeye headless have blue side LEDs and unfathomable (to most...I know what they are! ) twin inlays at the twelfth fret, twin barts and an E-Pro system? If so, it used to be mine......when I get round to scanning some old photos I'll post one of that and my old headless 6 (pre digicam days I'm afraid). Please post a pic of the old gal if it is!

This forum is funny... nice to chat. Well... I spoke to the guys yesterday and my pups have turned up so the final stage is set to roll... Al said it should be around another weekish... "Worth the wait"!! Woop woop woop woop.

If anyone is interested my laky is on ebay for cheap. Its a beaut bass, just I cant afford to keep her and have a Sei too. Im a one woman man (Well 2 actually! moving in with her soon...)

Yes it has blue led.s and two mysterious symbols at the twelfth fret so it must be your old bass. If those symbols aren't personal to yourself can you let me know what they are?

Steve (the very friendly guy I bought it from) explained the control setup to me but I got a headache half way through. He gave me a document that explains it all so it should be ok.

I've only had the bass for a couple of days but I really like it already.

Looking forward to seeing photos of the six string. Do you still have a Sei?

Paddy - Yup, I agree with your view on Fenders, apart from the Urge Mk1 of course !! (I also have a strong dislike for Hofners as well).

Hi Howie - yep, that's my old bass, although it's now got THG knobs on it by the look of it. The symbols.....you're gonna laugh, but I was always a massive Lord of the Rings fan, and the inlays are the letter "s" (the correct way round and a mirror image) in Elvish....

If I remember rightly, the controls are bass and treble cut/boost (stacked), semi parametric midrange (stacked), active/passive, coil taps (I think) on the switches...er, a passive tone knob (although I seem to remember it worked in active mode too), and I think that may be it. Oh, and vol and pan obviously. I think there's a pull "treble" setting as well. Of course it may have changed since I had it. It's great to see it again, thanks for posting the pics! I actually have some build photos somewhere; I'll have to see what I can find.

Roughly 3 weeks to go now 'til I pick up Alex's old bass, assuming no intervening financial disasters.....

Hi sei24bass, I couldn't resist this one. I wanted a Sei 4 string anyway and I love Buckeye Burl so that was that.
I've never had a headless before but I've found that it is so comfortable to play.

melt, Thanks for the info. The inlays are great, I presume that they are Abalone are they?
The Lord Of The Ring connection is good because I am also a big fan (of the books, NOT the films).
I have the original black knobs but I think the wooden ones are really good. I know that some people
don't like them but these are really well matched.

7string, Well done for getting a Fender. We should start our own club for people who own a Sei
AND a Fender. There would probably only be 2 people in it so how exclusive is that?
Mind you, I must admit that even I can't get into the '51 Precision. Does yours have any
contouring on the body or is it a slab. Do you like them because you have a favourite
bassist who uses/used one or is it purely the styling/sound?

Anyway, Paddy is probably planning the disciplinary hearing because of all this Fender talk
so I'd better go now - perhaps we'll get away with it.

Howie - glad you like the bass (and the inlays, which are indeed abalone). From what I can see the knobs look cool. I rather like the "wood everywhere" vibe......Martin had to talk me out of matching pickup facings. Next time, I'll get my way!

Ironic really; if I'd known it was for sale I would probably have bought it back. Still, onwards and upwards as they say......and I do love those singlecuts... .

Just been playing on Howie's 4 string headless that once belonged to Melt.

What a cracking instrument - really impressed - it's really punchy. First time I've played a headless and quite a while since a 4 string. Tis well balanced with fantastic tone. Think it could do with a small setup though.

I really think we ought to carry on the digression to Fender stuff, just to make the leotard pics come out !!

Howie - That's a great looking Sei !! Certainly makes the time go faster now you have 2 Seis to keep you going until your order is finished !!

I only posted the Fender comparison just to compare the 1st production electric bass to a 2007 Sei !!

Fender today, in my opinion, rely on their name selling basses and definately do not push-the-envelope of design, hence my non-love of Fenders. I played a '51 in a store but thought it just wasn't worth the money.

Geez, I'm gonna get flamed for this but what the hell !! I got a '51 P because I really like some of the new-country stuff (Big & Rich / Brad Paisley etc) and the '51 is ideal for that.

Also, I thought it would be nice to own a replica of what the very first production electric bass looked like...

The '51 is a slab body, no contours and is the most basic bass you could ever think of !! I found one on eBay and it was really cheap. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for and the bass needed a lot of TLC to bring it back to a playable condition. 'Jolene' now sits in the rack with the rest of my basses !!

Kevin - Is that one of those Bravewood basses ??

+1 on the headless comfort. They are also fantatstic for neck balance (more likely to get neck rise than dive) and transportation (fit soo much more easily into an average size car). They look a little different and you will get plenty of jokes about missing headstocks, but I have loved the last 12 years with my Sei headless 5. It will seem positively strange having a headed bass when the Sei 8 is finally ready!

7 String - You'd better get those flame resistant underpants from Paddy...QUICK. I've got this picture of you, wearing a stetson, big check shirt, blue jeans, cow boy boots and wearing a Fender 51P Reissue bass...now that's disturbing!

I hope that you will keep in touch on here anyway, after all you have had a Sei and you will be getting another one sometime won't you? (maybe when the novelty of building your own wears off). I too remember that day well. Hope you enjoyed the day out! Was sad to see her go, but she funded my 4001CS so it worked out ok in the end. And what's this about building your own bass? That's something I'd love to do...one day maybe (although I'm sure Martin would get sick of me trying to pick his brains!) .
