Self-quarantine plans

Trail biking. It's quiet out there. I have to fit new front forks and headset first though which is a job I could do with a hand with really without a stand. So I'm going to have to tie the frame up to a tree, it'll do it.

Fitting those forks and headset without a stand or a hand was like trying to sharpen a pencil with a butter knife. It's done though and the brake cables. Back in the saddle again.

Well, so much for being home with a ton of free time. I was tagged as essential so I had to move my office to my bass room. Tight fit but has worked out wonderfully. I have to go in to the office 2 days a week. I have to put in 8 a day or charge vacation time. So far I have worked 2 days at home and it has been very productive. I can Skype Engineers I work with if I have a question. Highway design must go on, even during a pandemic.

Sitting down and finally learning all of the ins and outs of Presonus Studio One 4 Prime. I was using Cubase, but it stopped recognizing my USB Audiobox. It's pretty intuitive, but I'm sure there are features built in that I'm not aware of that will make the recording process easier and also make the end product sound more professional. Looking forward to it!

Finally will get my self an understanding and ability to sit in jazz groups. I marched with an Eflat contrabass clarinet and transposed the music in real time. I got this. Will download IReal Pro, maybe sign up for Patiticui's classes. All thanks to Yogi.

In memory of the man who came to the fork in the road, and took it.

Interviewer:
What do you expect is in store for the future of jazz trumpet?

Yogi: I'm thinkin' there'll be a group of guys who've never met talkin' about it all the time...

Interviewer: Can you explain jazz?

Yogi: I can't, but I will. 90% of all jazz is half improvisation. The other half is the part people play while others are playing something they never played with anyone who played that part. So if you play the wrong part, its right. If you play the right part, it might be right if you play it wrong enough. But if you play it too right, it's wrong.

Interviewer: I don't understand.

Yogi: Anyone who understands jazz knows that you can't understand it. It's too complicated. That's whats so simple about it.

Interviewer: Do you understand it?

Yogi: No. That's why I can explain it. If I understood it, I wouldn't know anything about it.

Interviewer: Are there any great jazz players alive today?

Yogi: No. All the great jazz players alive today are dead. Except for the ones that are still alive. But so many of them are dead, that the ones that are still alive are dying to be like the ones that are dead. Some would kill for it.

Interviewer: What is syncopation?

Yogi: That's when the note that you should hear now happens either before or after you hear it. In jazz, you don't hear notes when they happen because that would be some other type of music. Other types of music can be jazz, but only if they're the same as something different from those other kinds.

Interviewer: Now I really don't understand.

Yogi: I haven't taught you enough for you to not understand jazz that well.

a lot has changed since this thread started...
Yeah the situation definitely took a sharp turn really quick, but hopefully this helps us in the short term.

In terms of what I've been doing, besides working from home, is practicing using some of Janek's books that I had purchased when he had a 50% off sale, as well as transcribing, sight reading, and painting warhammer 40k miniatures :smug:. I also washed my mountain bikes but it snowed again...so not quite biking season yet.

another fine day of social distancing in the Adirondacks

That's cool.

I've been buying new outdoor gear while stuck at home, but have still to find a spot which is not totally overwhelmed by people. They had to close some of the local trails and nature parks because there was no place to socially distance anymore. But this is Finland after all, so I can take off into a small forest that is less than 300m from my front door. Better than nothing. :D

I'm right on the border of the 6 million acre Adirondack Park, so I have plenty of options when someplace gets too crowded. I have hiked some pretty nice out of the way trails that I have overlooked in the past. I have seen a huge increase in people getting on the trails since this started. Good luck and stay safe & healthy
