SIMPLE QUESTION: which came first,... the student or the teacher?
be careful which YOUTUBE demo you watch! (this guy is definitely SELF TAUGHT)
I'm proud of myself for what I've accomplished, but I would have done it a lot faster with a proper teacher I think.

I take it you've never listened to Miley Cyrus.
I'm self taught, so I have a bit more "feel" for the instrument (that's what our worship leader said lol). It feels more natural for me and I can ear out a bassline pretty easily as a result of that.

Absolutely. Nowadays there are so many good resources - the Web, DVDs, etc - that if you're the slightest bit disciplined you can learn just about anything, for little money or for free. It's all out there on the Internet. If you want a teacher, there's a bunch of them on the Web offering lessons. Hell, there's a ton of lessons on YouTube alone - all free! This ain't like the old days (and I'm old enough to remember) where you had to have a teacher in order to progress, and self-learning books were few and far between. I know I've learned a ton of stuff on the Internet. Just here on TB alone I've learned so much since I joined.
I'm also self taught both on guitar and bass.
Pros: well developed ear, no "wrong way" to do it, no boundaries, etc.
Cons: looked down to by jazz snobs (waahh, get over it), took me longer to get my reading chops up to par with my ear (still not there yet either), nothing else.
And by the way, perhaps you don't want to believe it, but often in music there actually is a 'wrong way' to do things. Unless you're lucky enough to be leader of a hugely sucessfull international musical group, you're going to have to play somebody else's music at some point. If you can't play it the way they want, they will very quickly get somebody who can.
