Serek Basses

So I have had the Midwestern on a few gigs so far... I am a huge fan. Its a unique bass for sure, that has a very present sound and really pops through a dense mix. Short scales tend to have a bit tubbier of a sound, the exception with the Serek is that it also has great low note definition. Its already started to open up tonally since I have been playing it too. Also Jakes build quality is right up there with the best basses I have owned including Sadowsky, Lakland USA, Lull. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one if you're looking for a unique vintage style bass. :bassist::bassist::bassist:

I was pretty happy with the Dunlop flats but on a whim decided to try a set of Labella Black Tapewound. They sound and feel great on this bass! I think they will be staying on. The E string is a lot more responsive and I love how “wide” they sound. They fill out more sonic space and have a deep full tone.

Great choice!! I'd bet the LaBella LTF's would be fabulous as well.

Glad it still seems Rio be working out for you.

I forgot to mention that in April Jake was the guest speaker at the Chicago GTG. He gave a great talk that started with a presentation on short and medium scales and then he gamely covered a wide variety of questions about bass building from the audience.

Really a stand-up guy and anyone hearing him speak would feel confident ordering a bass from him.

I like this idea! I have the DR flatwounds on mine and wanting to try something else. What string length did you get medium or short?

My Serek Midwestern has arrived (in the UK) and just really bloody brilliant. I already have a Fender Mustang, so I’m not exactly new to the shortscale thing, but this Midwestern is a whole new ball game.

It arrived at 11am last Wednesday and I was able to take it to a gig that same day, and it nailed it, so much fun to play. It also sounds fantastic, I specifically wanted the B90 pickup, I figure that it’s part of the Serek sound and brand, the various other pickup options are great, but this B90 is the one! Mine has the dummy coil on a push/pull pot, which is great for recording, but actually live the standard wiring is perfectly fine.

Build quality is excellent, as most of you know, and even though the build is largely Walnut, it’s still very comfortably lightweight.

All in all, i’m very happy and couldn’t recommend Jake (Serek) enough as a luthier!
