Serek Owners/Fan Club

Here’s my take:

Both of the pickups in the P position will sound fairly similar and then when you add flats to the recipe they will sound darn near identical in a mix. Both pickups have a full low end, a polite high end and a somewhat articulate and colorful midrange. If you roll the tone off whatsoever you’re making the differences even less.

So how do you decide between the two?

1. How much 60 cycle hum can you tolerate?

2. Which one appeals to you more aesthetically?

That being said…

I just compared my Guild BS-1 equipped Lincoln to my Armitage with the LZN-B90 and here are some other thoughts. I have DR rounds on both basses and I set my amp flat.

The BS-1 seems to have a slightly hotter output and is also a bit brighter all around.

The LZN-B90 is darker sounding and doesn’t seem to be quite as mid forward as the Guild pickup. Putting the pickup in series mode evens the playing field significantly.

They are still fairly similar in the P position.

When I get some time I want to make a video comparing the Guild BS-1, the Novak BiSonic, the standard B90 and the LZN-B90.

Not a fair comparison. The body shapes are different :D

ah yes, I am interested in this too.
Recently intrigued with the Guild in an Armitage, with flats, maybe even medium scale (but that might be too much to ask without going custom)

If you’re considering the guild I’d splash a little extra and get the Novak. Jake has a video demoing the guild vs novak plus the coil tap on the novak. I had the guild my Lincoln and the Novak BS is a nice upgrade. Curtis’ pickups have a very nice clarity to the low end where many others just get wooly and poorly defined. The only caution id mention about the comparison video Jake put up is that the novak coil tap position is significantly quieter than the full pickup and this doesn’t come through on the video. He likely gain/level matched for the video, but having had it installed on my bass it’s not likely a setting I’d use much. I swapped my pickup back to a standard novak and sold the 4-wire version.

I've had my MW2 for about a month now. LOVE IT! So fun to play and the sound is perfect. I can get whatever tone I want with the single knob and my fingers. It also looks amazing.

I am ever so slightly bummed by the fact that it has a little neck dive. It's not bad at all but I explicitly asked for something with no dive - I have some nerve issues in my left shoulder and divey basses make it worse.

Any advice on straps or other ways to fix the issue here? I know there is tons of stuff online but I was wondering if any other Serek folks had this issue.

I feel bad even mentioning it since it's such a minor problem with an otherwise great bass - but I am stewing about it a bit and wanted some advice.

Thanks!

Glad you love the tone, but I’d be bummed about neck dive too! I would replace your strap with something wider and grippier. That would likely fix it if it’s just a little bit of neck dive. Of course, that won’t help sitting down, but there’s not a lot to be done about that. You don’t hear of neck dive much on Serek’s, but it’s a possibility when you use lightweight mahogany.

I use the mini betty straps for almost all of my basses. Nicely padded, good width, no issues with slipping.
