I was messin' around recently and found a nice solid all-purpose tone for my SG Special. I cut the bass to 11:00, cut the mids a bit at approx 700-800 Hz, and bump the treble to about 2:00. Pickup volumes up 80% and tone wide open, stock strings.

This is on a Genz Benz Contour 500 combo with gain at 11:00. It sounds full, clear, and very rounded to my ears, and still retains that signature Gibson sound. What do you all play through, and how do you EQ for your SG or EB?

It has nice grain.

Zontar - welcome aboard! That's a darn nice hunk of maple. Is it a 30" scale as well?
It would be so cool if Gibson had a maple fretboard option with the gloss black body, its just such a classic combo.

What do you all play through, and how do you EQ for your SG or EB?

My go to rig for the SG is a 1980 Musicman HD150 hybrid amp through a Bergantino HT322 cab. I run the Amp relatively flat tone wise but do usually flip the deep switch on (hey, it's a bass not a guitar). I normally also dial in a bit of overdrive with the volume and gain knobs. As for the settings on the bass, I usually start with the neck at 75% on and the bridge at 25% on and the tone turned up about 25% then I bump the tone knob up a bit if needed for clarity or to cut through more.

My other rig is an Ampeg SVT-VR and Bergantino NV610 but I actually haven't plugged the SG into that yet. The Musicman just sounds perfect for this bass, maybe its because of the wonderful overdrive you can dial into the amp. As noted by others, the SG just thrives on OD.

Epiphone EB-0 I got for $200. After setting it up, it's a really good bass.

I changed the pots due to frustration of not having a 'more controllable volume sweep'

The old pots, albeit still ok, didn't have as much of a range and I personally could only distinguish variable volume changes at only certain points..

The new CTS pots I put in have much more range in volume so now playing and singing and being able to dial back the volume comfortably is much more enjoyable

The tone pot also has more discernible differences as you dial it through

Really quite the enjoyable bass to play

Interesting solution for a minor personality improvement in this bass. I too have noticed the volume sweep/step and just assumed it was unique to mine. No issues with the tone pot on mine.

It's a 30" scale-made back when wood was much cheaper--and though I got it used-it was a good deal.

Thanks--23 is a good number.
I'm not sure what the pickups are-they're the ones it came with--the neck pickup is actually quite small, but under a large cover.
I mostly use the bridge pickup or both.
They don't have a high output--but they sound good.
