For recording purposes, I use the Sidewinder blended with Bartolini about 80% of the time. Unless one has a specific purpose for a "soloed" Mudbucker - which is maybe 15% for my needs - they should count on blending it with something.
This perspective changes if one is looking for a "doomy gloomy wall of sound"...
I *love* your concept of "unnecessary" basses...
Have several competing for those slots myself...but not anytime soon.
On a different note, Epi VP is a great instrument that you probably won't regret buying. I bought one for my bass-playing-son but it ended up being returned at the beginning of the whole C-19 mess. Definitely on my shopping list, albeit not for myself.
