SG & EB Bass Club

Well she is home and looking beautiful. The frets are like butter, the fretboard planed, conditioned and a complete setup was done.
A decision was made to leave the Dimarzio in for the time being. The reason? Because no one, including me has the courage to look under hood and see where those micro switches go to.
So here you all go.

Always wanted an SG bass, finally got one!

Came with TI Jazz Rounds installed (first time playing those, I'm more of a flat person). Surprised how bright this bass sounds even with the neck pickup soloed and the tone knob all the way down! E string is a bit weak, but I think that's because the silk wrap by the ball-end is over the saddle on that string.

I know it's common to mod these, but for the time being it's gonna stay stock though I will either cut the silk or change the strings to see if that's the cause of the weak E string. It plays super easy, feels very well put together, and I'm looking forward to a lot of fun times with it.

Congratulations!
  1. The "mudbucker" on the modern SG bass isn't a mudbucker at all. It's a relatively normal ceramic dual-coil underneath. The single row of pole pieces are purely cosmetic.
  2. You could stack a few washers on the ball-end of the E string to see if that helps. Temporary but free!
  3. TI Jazz Rounds are amazing.

Thanks! I knew it was a TB+ pickup, but wasn't 100% sure what to expect.

I'll see what I can find in the hardware drawer to use as spacers. The Jazz Rounds do sound and feel great!

You know how Ernie Ball sells "slinky" strings? The jazz rounds actually live up to that name. They're light, they're smooth, they have a definite voice to them that I don't hear out of other roundwounds I've tried. Granted, I've only played them for about an hour now, but that's how I'd describe them. Having been playing heavier flats on a longer scale bass before this, I really needed to lighten my touch with them.

At least you didn't have to wait 50 years.
I also have 2019 SG Standard and yes it sounds somewhat brighter but IMHO is still has the Gibson tone. I can't compare it to my '69 EB3 though someone in it's history swapped out the "Mudbucker" for a first run 1972 Dimarzio Model 1. I do have a '69 Mudbucker but there is some question as to whether it will be replaced or not.
Now HERE is a tried and true "Mudbucker"!

Looking at the string gauges within the set, they seem very light and lack of tension is what I'm afraid of. But I am also very interested in hearing that "voice" that you're referring to...decisions, decisions...

Like the TI Jazz Flats, the Jazz Rounds are very supple and compliant. Some people love this.

Like the TI Jazz Flats, the Jazz Rounds have a great complexity of tone in the midrange.

So basically, think Jazz Flats with more roundwound zing.

How long do the TI Rounds last compared to other rounds (or to TI flats?). They sound like I'd love them, but not if they have to be replaced every few weeks. One of the things I like about flats (except for Rotosound 77's) is that they last a long, long time.

No idea. String life is extremely subjective.
