The P-Bass pickup is quite tempting, as is the two band preamp. I'm still loving my ND3 and hoping to update the pickups on one of my fretlesses. Other potential purchases are merely GAS induced at this stage though.

I just got my second Squier jazz V and although the white one is staying original this one is getting routed for my Nd series 3 wide aperture humbuckers. Its got the four inline pots with the switch. What is a good versatile preamp recommendation for these pickups?

I have to put up some sound clips, but it's really very versatile, and with my pickups doesn't sound anything like a Stingray. But it goes from crystal clear glassy highs to thick dub. I was pleasantly surprised how many useable tones I could get.

You said you have four pots? Volume, Blend, Bass Treble. Or; Vol, Vol, Bass, Treble. Four pots.

Then you just need to come up with an idea for the switch. One thing you can do is there's an easy way to rig up the Stingray preamp to be a Sabre preamp with the treble boost.

You can also add a switch and have series/parallel/single for each pickup. Or a master series/parallel if you use a 4PDT.

Hey David -- In another thread, I asked about changing the MM-style pickups in my bass to give it more balls. The sound I'm interested is Rick-ish, reminicent of the early 80's Geddy tone. You recommended the Sidewinder Series 4.

Which combination of your pickups would put me in the ballpark? Active vs. passive? Series vs. parallel? I'm a newb at this stuff, so laymans terms would be appreciated!

The Sidewinders sound like single coils, and get a very Rick like tone. You can order the SW4 MM set and that will do it.

They are passive pickups, but you can use a preamp if you like. I usually suggest to run the sidewinders in series, but you can switch them into parallel for an even brighter tone.

Sure, they would work great in single pickup situations. I very often find myself using just the neck pickup, which on my bass is somewhere around the J or P spot. If you want more mids, use a bridge pickup in that spot. If you want a rounder tone, use the neck pickup.

Just a quick note to announce I have a new 4-string P bass Neodymium pickup. It's a quad coil, so it's like a small humbucker in each case, and it can be switched into split-single coil mode, as well as series and parallel.

A there any samples? Do they sound more like wider or narrower ND4 pickups? I got a slight GAS for a PJ set.

Not sound samples yet. It's wide like regular Nd3, but I can also make it narrow. It's basically like a wide neo pickup split in half.

Today he tells me that the one he's delivering doesn't have the laser etched logo because he's changing laser etching vendors, but he'll ship me out a replacement when he gets one that's etched.
