Are those narrow or wide ND3s? If Narrows can get that effect, I could use them on my Jazz Bass... oh boy, the GAS. Here it comes again!

Those are wides. The narrow Jazz pickups are similar sounding, just a little bit more like single coils. The neck pickup on the wides and narrows sounds a lot a like.

I make both the wides and narrows in the soapbar and MM shapes.

Jason,

Great clips. Thank you. I have a very similar bass, albeit the korean NS2000/5, that I am thinking of putting these pickups into. Currently wearing EMG 40DC pickups. One question: which coil are you using in the single coil mode? David says that the bridge pickup coils are wound to emphasize different voices. Great tones, great playing. Thanks again.

So, let me get this straight. If I got jazz-shaped ND3s I would be able to get a sounds like those those ones from a jazz bass, only leaning more to the "single" sound? (within reason, of course my bass won't sound exactly like his bass).

Oh, you evil, evil man... and there's a bonus coming up at work in a couple of months... :hyper:

Thanks for the information! You have unleashed major GAS in the other side of the planet with that post.

Say-hey, anybody got a sound sample of a SGD pickup placed on the MM sweet spot? :hiding:

Yes, it would be very similar. Hang on, and I'll post some clips of my Ibanez. I'm in the middle of replacing the bridge pickup on it for a stock Jazzbucker. I had an experimental neo prototype in it.

mmbongo has one in his Brute. Maybe he'll have some clips.

I think you can expect the tone of the bridge pickup in Jason's clip, but a little deeper because it's farther from the bridge.

lee,
I wired the pickups according to the way that David had specified on the paper that comes with his pickups, using 2 DPDT on-on-on switches.

I am assuming that the coil closest to the neck is used on the neck pickup and the bridge coil closest to the bridge is being used, for hum cancelling when using the center detent on the balance........David could probably tell you better than I.

Probably related but perhaps not an exact match: You can choose which ever you want. With my Nordstrom DCs the pickups are wound "the same" with regard to polarity, etc. so I had a choice between outer coils or inner coils for humbucking in single coil mode with both volumes dimed (i.e. Jazz Bass like). I suspect David's and most humbuckers work like this.

The good thing is, I didn't really lose that "Spector" sound, when running both pickups in "series", just have more flexibility now........here's a pic of that bass (although it's backwards to some folks) ;)

I added foil to the cavity although it does have carbon paint, I believe it helped reduce single coil noise greatly.

OK, quick and dirty Neo Jazzbucker demo.

Here's my '87 Ibanez SR-885LE 5 string. It has a basswood body, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. I have an aluminum Hipshot Type A bridge on it, and D'Addario XL nickel strings. The strings are a month or two old.

First you hear the neck pickup, both pickups, and the bridge pickup.

The bass also has my 2-band preamp in it set for a more or less flat tone. It was recorded direct into a Roland VM-3100Pro digital mixer connected via S/PDIF to my iMac. The bridge pickup was clipping my mixer's preamp slightly. :hmm:

[EDIT] I just noticed that the neck pickup was a little too far away from the strings, which is why it sounded a little on the light side. I had removed both pickups prior to recurring the clip

It should be the two outside coils.

The bridge pickup has the two coils wound differently. The coil closest to the neck has a rounder tone, and the coil closest to the bridge has a tighter tone with more mids. I did this to get a fuller tone when the bridge pickup is soloed.

Either will sound fine as a single coil, but they will sound a little different.

The neck pickup is symmetrical.

Thank you so much for this clip. I think either my Jazz bass or my OLP will be sporting SGD pickups in the near future...
