The first clip just sounds like a bass... pretty generic. Should be easy to get from the neck pickup.

In the second clip you are hearing a lot of the amp. But also sounds like the bridge pickup with a lot of the upper mids rolled off and a lot of low mids/upper bass. You can hear how the volume of the notes decrease when he plays up on the neck. I get a similar tone through my Hartke LH500, but with more oomph in the high notes.

1st clip I have not been able to get close with my EMG's no matter the EQing, going through a cabinet or DI. There's something in that sound I can't put my finger on that the EMG's don't do. I love the tone that EMG's have but now that I have primarily moved to fretless my fretted bass needs a change in its sonic spectrum in order to fill the role I have in mind.

2nd clip is a Stingray through an Aguilar Tone Hammer to an Ampeg. Can actually get sort of close to this with the onboard Aguilar OBP-3 into a Sansamp RBI, EMG's don't work too well with the Sansamp compared to my passive pickups I have in other basses.

While I know it'll be hard to match exactly what you hear on mastered recordings, it's about getting that deep bass vibe without mudding up a more metal sound track.

EMGs have the two coils wired up in parallel, so they always lack a certain thickness to the low end.

Yeah, the Aguilar amps are very dark sounding IMO. I get a very similar tone turning down the highs on my 2-band preamp and having the bass cranked. I like to be able to get that dark tone when I want it, and not have it wired into the amp.

As an example, here's the bridge pickup on my Ibanez with my Neo Jazzbuckers. I have the bass all the way up on the preamp and the treble is about half way:

And that's just the bridge pickup. The neos have a lot of low end pressure, while not being muddy at all. The wide aperture neos would sound even fatter. The neck is much deeper sounding while still not being muddy.

Same pickup/bass with the highs boosted later in the clip:

Even brighter! (both pickups on)

No, it went to a 500k volume, blend and tone controls. It was recorded direct.

Now that bass has my 2-band preamp in it (above clips), but that recording was done when it was passive.

Thanks. It would be interesting to hear the series/parallel/single recording of the same bridge Jazzbucker without the loading of the capacitors. Don't get me wrong - it sounds great as recorded - I would just love to compare.

Capacitors do not load the signal when the tone control is on 10. However, you do hear the resistance of the pot. This is because of the impedance of the cap in the frequency range the cap works in.

However, in that recording I had a TBX tone control installed, and it was on 10, so you were not hearing the cap or the tone pot since the control is then effectively out of the circuit.

just ordered a set of ND3BC4 yesterday :bassist:
I can't wait to install them on this :D

thanks David for your great communication and advices :)

I just got my acg eq02 preamp. and I'm looking at getting some of the sidewinders in wide and deep for my stingray hh. I think after they are installed I will have the greatest bass known to man with so many tonal options at my fingertips. I have listened to the clarity on those pickups through the samples and I should be able to get a clean tone with clarity for chords.

What are splitting options. I'm thinking about how i want to wire the five way switch. I'm looking to wire them in series to help with some of the low end. Specifically I was interested in splitting the top coil to get a stingray hs tone for one of my options. Is this possible with the construction of these pickups?

Any pics of those chrome covers or what the pickups look like with the blade exposed?

Chrome covers for the HB size pickups?

Here's the full and mini sizes. I also now have gold as an option.

Another option for that cover is:

You can have different inserts too, including a chrome screen for that vintage look.

I also do a custom set of these from time to time:

I don't do exposed blades often, but here's a custom Rick pickup:

Hi !
I have a fretless 5 strings singlecut bass beeing made by a luthier, and I'm looking for a pair of pickups for this bass. The bass will be passive.

I thought about a pair of ND3 soapbars, wide aperture, EMG 40 size. And I've a few questions to adress

- first, does this choice seems right, for a fat and modern fretless sound with a lot of growl (think about a pedulla pentabuzz for reference)

- second, i've head about some player using "neck" pickups in the bridge position to enhance the low mids, especially when the bridge pickup is soloed. have you heard about this, and would it be possible to order a "special set" consisting of two neck ND3 instead of a neck + bridge set ?

-third, I read about the "Wal replica" pickups here but they don't appear on your website … are they still on prototype level ? They sound like a good idea for a growling fretless, considering what a Wal fretless can sound like !
