    • Bassology - Next lesson with Anthony happened today. We did some review of what we were looking at, and then slowly started moving forward with a new exercise for the pentatonic stuff, and then a quick look at major modes. He recommended this video of his presentation at Fodera on this stuff; I've already watched it but it was good to look at it again after the lesson for a refresh.
    • SBL - New lesson for the Technique Accelerator: this one is about muting. Going to work on those exercises as well. Not much to say. I definitely have a bit of a muting problem, so this is going to be great to hone in on that.
Notes:
  • Thanks for the kind words, all. :)
  • What with the COVID stuff and the family stuff, I ended up taking a few days break from bass. I don't feel guilty or anything, but I definitely missed it, which is great. I'm happy to slowly get back on the train.
  • I'm working from home these days, what with the apocalypse, so hopefully I'll iron out a better routine for my day and get some extra time practicing - today I was slacking and started pretty late so only got to do a shortened practice session.
  • Stay safe out there everyone! :)

Boy oh boy. I caught a bad cold that knocked me out this past week. I was pretty sure it wasn't COVID because I didn't have trouble breathing or a fever, but it was still scary to get sick like that at this time. Anyway, today I'm finally feeling a bit better I spent some time today and yesterday noodling on the bass, playing along to songs I know, soloing, and having a good bit of fun. That's a week lost, so I'm going to have to really buckle down to cover the stuff I'm supposed to get working for Anthony. The Technique accelerator I can do at my own pace, so I'll just push it back one week and always be a bit behind; that's ok, as it's lifetime access, so no worries about missing a week - just pick up where I left off. :)

Notes:
  • Watched this video and found what Wooten says to be very important to keep in mind as perspective while I'm doing all this work and all these exercises. You need to work hard to understand all the musical stuff, sure, but, ultimately, all that matters is how you play.
  • Easy starting day today.

  • @instrumentalist I use a bunch of the Lumbeat apps. I have.... like 4 or 5 of them. They're not cheap, but they're pretty great, I think, for the type of practice I'm doing, especially for being an iOS app so just ready to go on my iPad. For the internal rhythm thing, I'm using the one called SuperMetronome. Overall, I'd recommend them, but not if you have ready access to other sophisticated drum machines.

Quick question... you play a five-string, right? How do you complete all exercises in part A in Bass Fitness in 30 minutes at the bpm indicated? I've only got one extra string over you, but somehow, it takes me much longer - I do the up exercise and the down exercise from B string to B string as written starting on the first fret; I then move up a fret for each exercise until the 12th fret - and then back down to the 1st fret, as the book suggests. I can't see myself getting through all 12 exercises in 30 minutes. If you have some secret, I'd love to know.

Good to see you back practicing - I'm selfishly using it for my own inspiration. :D Stay dedicated, and stay safe.

Notes & Comments:
  • Shortened day as I had a virtual dinner with friends tonight. :)
  • @juggahnaught Yep, I'm on a fiver. You're right, it would be impossible to do in 30mins, as written. So I chunk it in the following way: I start on the first fret, do ex 1 B to G and G to B, then ex two, then ex three, until I've gone through all of Part A on the first fret. Then I repeat it on second fret; then the third fret; etc. Each fret fully takes, at 90bpm in 8th notes, around 3 minutes (really, about 2m40s). Doing that fully to the 12th fret takes about 35 minutes. I only write down 30 as I'm not interested in keeping super accurate time. Then, on even calendar days I'm going 12 to 1, and on odd days I'm going 1 to 12. Pretty simple. I think that's a good amount of work. Joaquin says to practice each exercise for at least 15 minutes... that's not bad advice, but, from the other things I'm doing with Anthony, I'm doing a bunch of permutation exercises in some of the others things I'm practicing, so I'm a bit more relaxed with those instructions. The other way I go about it, like today, when I have a shorter time to practice, I set myself a timer for how long I want to do each thing and finish wherever I am. Best of luck, and you stay safe as well!

Sunday's Log

Not a proper log today as I didn't "practice", because it was more a setup/fun day. I streamed on Twitch for about 4 hours, just playing through my repertoire and hanging out with total strangers. It was great!

I also spent most of the morning/afternoon revising my setup and now everything is in my piano: computer, PS4, music stuff, everything. It's great and I now have easy access to all I need! :)

    • SBL:TAP - Lesson 4 - Until now Scott's covered ascending stuff, but not descending. Today was all about descending and exploring Alternate vs Economy Plucking. I tried the Alternate to see what it was like and it's pretty wild... how do people do that?! Economy is so much more natural to me; so that's what I'm going with. However, Scott gave a few tips and pointers that I identified as things I'm not doing and I can adopt order to improve how I rake.

Notes & Comments:

  • Today I was in a foul mood and didn't feel like doing anything. Days when I feel like this, well, I do not relish the bipolar life. I managed to at least do a teensy bit, at least. Going to try and do some physical exercises tonight before bed, and tomorrow morning as well, to get some endorphins and dopamine going. I do not want to be like this for tomorrow's lesson with Anthony.
  • Switching up the log title format. This COVID self-quarantine thing is making the days blur together. This'll be a good way to get a handle on what day it is.
  • @juggahnaught Sucks about the tweeters. Hopefully you'll be able to resolve that easily if you rely on the speakers. I use them when I'm doing transcription. I find it easier to hear basslines with their flat response than listening on my B&W Zeppelin.

    • Bassology: Today we covered major scale relationships among the 15 existing scales, and how to learn all the notes in every scale. More importantly, the why behind the scales and how they come to exist. Came about because I mentioned to Anthony that not knowing all the notes in every scale was one of the impediments I currently had, and he was happy to address this. So not exactly a "bass" lesson, more a theory lesson, but a much needed one, because it makes a lot more sense now.

Notes:
  • I hand made bread today for the first time ever. It was ok, for a first loaf. A bit dense. I will make bread again. This has nothing to do with bass, but it begins with a B, so I included it.

Very cool that you're working with Anthony. Please give him my regards. He gave me a lifetime's worth of work in a handful of lessons. I'm still working with it today.
Congrats on the bread!
