      • Today we covered an extremely challenging but crazy awesome exercise. Anthony's name for it is "Halle Berry's Phone Number". Essentially, the exercise is structured such that, you learn both the notes in each key, their function, and all the locations of that note on the fretboard in one go. This is gonna be a few months worth of work to get it down to a decent speed. In order to keep track, hovever, I've started an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of my progress with this exercise. The best thing is that there's several ways to practice this so, as soon as I get good at one way, I have three other "complications" to include to make it more challenging.
      • We also covered, in three minutes, broken sixths and getting started up on those.

Notes & Comments:

  • The Continuous Motion exercise from SBL is really great. I'm noticing connections and patterns because of it that are slowly starting to get ingrained in my head/hands. But I'm still having trouble with it, so I'll continue plugging away at it, because I can tell the payoff will be immensely worthwhile.

Notes & Comments:

  • This past week I ran an experiment: practising without the use of a practise log. I was curious what it would be like, and what the main differences were. In short, I vastly prefer to practice using a log because it increases the efficiency of my practice. Here were my quick observations:
    • While I practised everyday, it was scattered and not focused. So efficiency went out the window in comparison to what I did before.
    • I had a lot more noodling time. Without a schedule to keep me focused, I'd practise stuff and end up in noodling sessions which, while fun, were just me rehashing what I could already do, rather than working on stuff that was challenging.
    • Practise was more sporadic: instead of picking up the bass and sitting down for an extended time to work on something, I'd pick it up, play, and then put it down. Discipline was a lot more lacking.
    • I felt like I could be doing more, but I enjoyed just fooling around.
  • I did not mark down hours at all this week. Anyways, getting back to the log this week. :)

    • Bassology - Today we covered arpeggiating the diatonic scale in all modes and all positional permutations.

Notes & Comments:

  • Today I didn't "practice"; instead, I played through my entire repertoire (the whole three hours) non-stop, as it if was a show. I was practicing stage presence haha. So I had the lights going wild (I have Hue lights so I can program them to go nuts with colours and such), I was standing with the bass (instead of the usual sitting routine), and I was focused on three things - given that I already knew how to play the songs:
    • SMILING (and showing that I'm having fun)
    • dancing and being active and engaging
    • not looking at the neck (I played for about two hours with my eyes closed - though there were a few songs I had to steal a glance at)
  • Today was a lot of fun!

Notes & Comments:

  • So I've been away for a bit - just over two weeks. For the past few weeks I've been in a very weird mood and had no desire to practice bass - even from a discipline point of view. So I just took some time off instead of forcing myself. I felt guilty about it, but it also felt good. I'm gonna start up slowly again - I don't want to get back into the funk I was in so I'm gonna avoid working for 3 hours on technical stuff and focus a bit less on it for now, and then slowly bring that back in.
  • I spent some time setting up my P and my J last night and it was interesting to see, at the end, that I've definitely dialed in preferences in terms of action and pickup height and such, over the past year. I'm definitely pretty comfortable doing setups to my specs these days.

Notes & Comments:

  • Today, I did a bunch of technical work to get my fingers going again. I'll be picking and choosing from now on and focusing on one thing per day, for technique stuff. This means I need to start keeping track of available exercises.
  • Attacking fretboard work from a different perspective. The stuff I've been doing with the Fretboard Accelerator has been great, but I'm going to take it to the next step, because I want to ingrate everything more organically. There are not a lot of arpeggio shapes for each chord type; each chord type just has one big ass arpeggio that spans seven strings and then repeats. As you move around the fretboard, you're just looking at different starting points in that arpeggio. I'm going to focus on the linking between the major, minor, and dominant geometries in each shape, so that, at any point, I can go to any type of chord in the same hand-space. So the idea is, instead of learning D minor arpeggios, A minor arpeggios, or E minor arpeggios (with C as the key center) I will eventually know the entirety of the minor arpeggio shape, and just start it off the required space, with the rest of the notes naturally falling into place. I'm going to call this Movable Arpeggio Geometry, for easy of reference.
    • I will be notating this as "Key center 1st finger B string" as a means of keeping track of the specific position I'm practising, and focusing on integrating into muscle memory. I will, however, be forcing myself not to think of these as they are read ("1st finger shape"), but rather, as parts of the whole arpeggio, with identifiable roots. So while I will physically be playing five strings, I will mentally be visualizing the rest of the mode - the extra two strings not on the bass. This should then help link the shape as I start moving it around.
    • Each position should be practised until comfortable, but, should be followed by new material. The point is to see the big picture while operating in specifics, and that requires continuous integration.
    • Exercise order, for familiarity and execution, should be:
      • Ascending
      • Descending
      • Ascending/Descending
      • Descending/Ascending
      • Standard chord changes (ii V Is, iii VI ii V Is, etc) - full A/D pattern switching chords on direction change
      • Continuous Motion System (Basic) - 4 notes -> 4 notes, etc. in A/D patterns
      • Continuous Motion System (Complex) - 3 notes -> passing note -> 3 notes, etc, in A/D patterns

  • Looking for a new job, and helping my parents renovate their basement, and getting back into photography have really gotten in the way of tons of bass practice. However, I'm managing to practice an hour to an hour and a half a day - I'm just not finding time to keep up with this log. I'm including five hours for the past five days, then. I think the solution is that I'm going to write some custom software for myself - when I have some time - where I can just tick what I've done and how long I've done it, and it'll just spit out a pre-formatted log that I can then just paste here.
