Double Bass Shen Owner's Club

My first upright is a 2005 Shen SB80. I am the third owner. It was very well cared for, yet played like crazy. It has a great sound. I was really lucky when I found this! I really love it. It's the buckeye colored one on the left.

The one on the right is my new project. It's a 1940 Kay S-9.

After dragging my feet for years, I finally purchased my first 'Bull Fiddle' - a Shen SB80! 20 years of professional electric playing & finally "getting real", lol!

Seems like a great bass to start on + I have a Canadian tour coming up playing upright exclusively so a plywood bass seemed smart!

After having nothing but a purely colossial pain in the ass with the Hoffmann bass, I sold it off and waited until just last week when I bought my Shen SB80 (sorry about the clutter, have a 9 year old in the house ;) )

Anyhoo, I bought it from Monaco's Violin Shop in Amherst (Link Removed) and got a great deal as well. Now normally, Shen includes a bag with their basses, but since I already have a decent bag, I was able to get a set of Helicore Hybrids instead. Also, Mark Monaco installed a nice set of solid brass, erm.....

..... adjusters :D that I removed from my old bridge, and upgraded the endpin free as well. All told, and with a new bow, for less that $1700. I truly love my new bass and was a very popular instrument at last night's jam session at the Historic Colored Musicians Club in Buffalo. Plus my K&K Double Big Twin worked out very well with this bass.

Looks like the SB-80 is the most popular model right now.

Count me in, too:

2004 7/8 SB200 flatback, maple sides and back, as opposed to the willow being used nowadays for this model.

Bought it from a pawn broker on eBay last September. Big bass with a nice, big sound. When I was a student 25 years ago, you'd have had to pay four times the price I paid (in 1987 dollars, even!) to get an instrument that sounds and plays this well. Currently wearing Helicore low-tension orchestral strings. Would love to add an extension.

Currently being used in the Carmel, Ind. Symphony.

Cheers!

My SB-80, or as I call it, Ol' Reliable. I bought it in 2007 (before my freshman year of high school) and have had it since, and used it for all of my youth orchestras, summer festivals (two years at Interlochen, one a full ride) and conservatory auditions, surviving harrowing scrapes with death and dismemberment by uncoordinated trombonists and stage crews, while still managing to sound pretty good (and never getting an open seam or crack!)

Currently borrowing a better instrument, but it was my primary instrument in school, and still the only one I own (until I go shopping in June).

$1250 of investment got me a hell of a long way.

Plus two Shen Club members! Welcome and congratulations to csrund and Adam Attard!

Do you have a nickname for your Shen? I call my SB 180 "Sam", and although she's not a Shen, I call my Christopher 7/8 5-string "Chrissy" because she has some nice looking Busetto curves! My nicknames aren't very creative, but it will be interesting to hear yours!

Here is...

I call my SB200 "Berta", as in "big Bertha". That's not very flattering, but she isn't susceptible.

Played my first real 'show' on the SB80 last night. Grand Ole Opry with Paul Brandt and Ricky Skaggs sitting in! (no pressure!) Sounded great and got a lot of compliments on the tone. Inexpensive Shen SB80 with an inexpensive K&K BassMax pickup into an active Radial di.

In rehearsals this past week - 3 full days of rehearsals for a new Double Bassist will build up some calluses quick!
