Double Bass Shen Owner's Club

I’m about 2 months in with a new to me, used Shen 190 - the light weight and big sound are what really stand out. Aesthetically, I’m drawn to gamba roundbacks, but the sound on this thing...

I've been looking to upgrade from my Upton STD bass. Please update us on the playability and tone when you can. Thanks!

The 190s are great instruments! 3 of my students have them them and they sound great, feel great and are a perfect value for the money. Highly recommend finding a shop that has a few and picking one up.

I on the other hand should have an 150 7/8ths Hybrid in the next week or so.

will do. Hoping to get it restrung today.
The Pirastro Perpetuals have been on for a few days now and so far its a great combination. Playability and tone are excellent, just a bit of new string twang but these strings settle in quickly. Very happy with this bass, feel of the neck is just right and I really like the flatback. Its a lot easier to balance than my old carved back was - hadn't expected that difference. As others have said, this is a lot of bass for the price tag. Before buying this bass, I had been looking at a relatively new vintage fully carved bass that was $7k. Honestly I think that the feel and sound of the 190 is as good as the bass I was looking at buying.

Ok, I am probably going to pick up a new SB 90 tomorrow and thinking about a SB 150 or some Shen Hybrid.

I'm new to the Shen world. I got a used SB 80 here on TB and I was really happy with the quality of the bass. I’d been looking for a Engelhardt Swingmaster for my country and acoustic band gigs without much luck then while looking at hybrid Shens I discovered the SB 90. So tomorrow I’m heading to the Bass Violin shop in NC tomorrow in hopes of bringing a big nasty blonde home. ;)

Thinking of selling my SB 80 and Engle S1 on consignment to help buy a new hybrid Shen too.

Pictures will be posted for sure.

NBD - I just took delivery of this lovely little Shen SB88 5/8, thanks to the Bass Violin Shop in Greensboro, N.C. I can't say enough good things about dealing with them - such an easy deal with the upgrades I wanted, and the bass arrived perfectly set up after travelling halfway across the country.

Beautiful!!
What's the difference between this and an SB80

How do you like the EP Slaps on the SB88?

I Loooove them. For me they are wonderful. Great attack/decay, bottom end, feel, diameters, and I really like the arco sound. Very dry/raw. I just had the full circle installed and the G string winding broke in the process, the wonderful shop replaced it, but I have to echo what I have read elsewhere, that aluminum wrapped G is fragile.

Do you have yours on your SB90?
