Shipping Damage: Lost For Words

I'm sorry for not buying every story they trow at me.... but my little toe tells me, something isn't right.
I try to see this story at the buyers angle..... every story has two sides....

If it was insured through Reverb, he keeps the bass and gets his money back and you keep the money he paid.
I’ve had basses listed on there and had people buy them and never be paid after 72 hours. Happened twice with the same bass. Filed a complaint with Reverb and they had their accounts suspended.
I’d file a complaint against the buyer.

That is very atypical of shipping damage unless there was something floating around in the case in transit. You don't get an impact divot in wood like that unless it smacks really hard on something of roughly that diameter. To do that in shipping, whatever it was would have had to go through the box and the HSC. Not likely.

I believe any reasonably experienced person will come to the conclusion that it is not damage as as result of shipping. With that in mind, it comes down to the ability to prove it was or was not shipped that way. Unfortunately, in most cases, the buyer has the leverage.

It is particularly hard when selling on Reverb, because you don't get your money until they say you can have it.
You get your money before even shipping the bass

Yeah what if the buyer did that to the bass? If there isn’t a matching hole in the hard case it happened when the bass was out of the case. It’s unlikely the shipper did that although it’s possible? I would say more of a case of who would be more likely to be opening the bass case and it would be the buyer. Just saying! who knows!?:eyebrow:

I won’t sell basses on Reverb. I prefer to sell them here or not at all. I sold a mint G&L Kiloton 5 to an inexperienced buyer who insisted the “electronics” were defective and it was producing hum through his amp. After a bunch of back and forth I politely explained that hum wouldn’t be a result of the basses “electronics” as it was passive and was likely his electrical services that were the problem. He protested to Reverb, they held my $ while in dispute and he eventually took the bass to a friend’s where it performed as expected. Reverb released my $ and closed the dispute. This went on for three weeks.

Never again.

The original ad was also posted here. Go look at the pictures. Let me know if you see what the buyer is claiming. While you’ll at it, check out the 20+ transactions I’ve had here since 2007 and let me know if you see any other complaints.

I take the best pics I can (IPhone) in great lighting. Then I use editing software to mark any dings on the photo. I take a photo from every angle. I learned that from being on here so long.

Buyer ultimately can force a refund through his credit card company, I used this once on Reverb when I bought a 63 SG that didn't turn out to be as original as the seller claimed. Wouldn't take a refund, wouldn't respond to reverb. My CC told me to ship it back to seller and they'll do a chargeback once they have confirmation the store had it back. I did this and the store refunded my money. Now I know if anything is amiss my CC company has my back. I've only done it that once but if this guy is that adamite you will lose, even if reverb finds in your favor. Unless he is scared reverb will ban him.

I had an issue where it looked like UPS slammed the case on the ground. This messed up the part that holds the neck so the bass wound up being loose in the case. This moving action broke the G machine head on a custom shop jazz 5 60’s. Luckily the machine was still partially attached by the plastic so it didn’t roll to the side of the body. Had it done that, I’d expect similar damage.
So I’m wondering if they slammed it and left a space for something to fall out of the compartment. This just another avenue to ck out. Since they buyer wouldn’t send s/n, I suspect fish and carrots at play like many others.
It looked beautiful to me before it got crapped up. I bet it could be refinished and look great but that’s more $.
This is very frustrating and totally sucks. I feel for you. The lesson I learned from your post is send pics or packing video with the item.
