Shipping Damage: Lost For Words

The buyer opened it. He dropped it. Now he wants to blame it on you.

I have unfortunately met with a situation like this before, albeit when dealing face to face. I sold a bass many years ago, having driven a considerable distance to meet the buyer. I had mentioned in my advert that the bass had some minor damage, and that I was happy to present the bass for inspection prior to sale hence my willingness to meet with a genuine buyer. The buyer was happy and a deal was done. The buyer later got in touch, saying the bass was more damaged than he had thought when I handed it over and that he wanted to meet for a refund. He sent a photograph back which showed some extensive damage which was not there when the bass was handed over and I could only concloude the bass had been badly handled or dropped after he took ownership of it. It really left a sour taste in my mouth and I can only imagine I'd have been stuffed if I'd sold it through Ebay or similar because of their tendency to side with a buyer over a seller.

OP, the damage to that bass is horrendous. Really disappointing to see the bass end up like that, however it came to be. It looks like it has been thrown down a flight of stairs.

That is pretty severe damage. I’ve had this happen, but not to this degree, on 2-3 basses I’ve shipped(out of at least 200 over the last 20+years). I just chalk it up to mystery. It shouldn’t have happened, I don’t know how it happened. Maybe it was the buyer being dishonest but I can’t say for sure and I really don’t care to point fingers. Sucks though!

Ah, UPS....I have had my issues with them in shipments in the past. Lately however I’ve been impressed. Highly doubtful it was inspected or damaged during shipping like that. Basses rarely ever get damaged like that. Cases yes, latches especially. But without consistent damage through the case...something is definitely up.

An insurance claim may or may not go very far. I’ve heard many people not receiving payouts and a few that have.

Did you get to see the shipping box after the fact?

It does look like the same bass to me, and it does appear that that one ding on the lower horn might have already been there. I notice the bass has Dunlop strap lock buttons installed. You didn’t happen to leave the strap locks unsecured, or perhaps ship it with the original strap buttons unsecured did you? To me, it looks like a strap button may have been flying around in that case and at one point was at the bottom of the case and the bass landed on it. In that case it would indeed be shipping damage, and might not be covered since it would be due to bad packaging. Not trying to attack you or say you did anything wrong, just trying to explore all avenues here. Hope everything works out for you, man.
Dude, no way. For one, the OP would have had to of made a huge blunder. Nobody in their right mind would not think to check for loose items before shipping an expensive bass such as this. Secondly, I believe it would take an immense sudden impact to create that kind of damage from a loose item against a padded case.

But, they do ship acoustics quite often without the end pin installed. So, good thought, but I just don’t think it’s probable in this case.

If he's not willing to/reluctant to show the serial and damage in one shot...I scream false claim as well. Not to point fingers, however anyone who has not worries would comply to your request...just saying. Bummer indeed though.

That is very atypical of shipping damage unless there was something floating around in the case in transit. You don't get an impact divot in wood like that unless it smacks really hard on something of roughly that diameter. To do that in shipping, whatever it was would have had to go through the box and the HSC. Not likely.

I believe any reasonably experienced person will come to the conclusion that it is not damage as as result of shipping. With that in mind, it comes down to the ability to prove it was or was not shipped that way. Unfortunately, in most cases, the buyer has the leverage.

It is particularly hard when selling on Reverb, because you don't get your money until they say you can have it.

It is certainly in the seller's best interest to take good photos of the instrument before shipping. Each digital photo has a date as part of its data set, so you can prove when the photos were taken.

How could that have happened inside a case? Did you get pics of the case, as well?

I highly doubt it happened inside the case. The case is the standard Fender case that came with the bass. He did not send me pics of the case.

I remember one time being anxious to open a new bass and dropped it. But it was my fault and I didn’t asked the seller for a refund.

Because of my status with Reverb, they release the funds as soon as I put in a tracking number. So I can usually access my funds the day of or as soo. As I ship.

I bought a bass from L&M up here in Canada. It was a super rare model in mint condition, had a special case as well. It was shipped from a city not too far away. It arrived with a hole punched through the box and through the HS case. Didn’t hit the bass, but this case was ruined.
I work for a shipping company and I can’t see how that can happen but it did.
I’ve had more damage occur to basses in cases than outside cases.
A friend of mine bought a mint rare bass recently and when he received it, it had a nick in the paint job- inside the HS case.

Well spotted thats how it looks to me too...good chance he restrang it, and had a major uh oh moment and did that damage

Good catch! No one is going to restring a bass with shipping damage that they're going to return. It came out of the box perfect, he dropped it while restringing it. He even provided you photographic proof! Lying D____che.

This is honesty... I have a few select words for the buyer, but can't repeat them here... not sure how people can sleep at night acting like this, but they do.

Just me... I wouldn't worry about my profile rating on Reverb. The seller has to have some protection against crap like this.
