Shipping Damage: Lost For Words

Man I just bought one. The guy didn’t pack it as well as I would have and when I got the case out of the box three of the four latches had come undone. I was nervous but after opening the case up and upon inspection nothing happened to the bass. Something about this is not right.

I've purchased basses that were professionally shipped in their hard cases and still got damaged. One had a busted tuning peg. Another a busted volume knob. In both instances they were vintage basses with "loose" fitting hard cases so there was room to shake and rattle around inside, causing the damage. Not so with the modern Fender SKB cases which fight tightly. I think the OP is on the right side of this one.

All I can say is "good luck." I truly hope this ends well for you. However, don't be surprised if logic goes right out the window. This was our horror story: PayPal “item not as described” Horror Story – Reverb saves the day
Thanks for posting that here. I’ve had one purchase on Reverb and it went flawlessly. I was nervous because of Pay Pal involvement and UPS shipping. I’ve had terrible experiences with both. I got lucky with a recent Tbird purchase from an honest seller who only accepted PayPal. The bass was that special, so I took the chance. But from other experiences, if I can’t pay through my credit card, I’ll think long and hard before going through PayPal. Even as a buyer, who they apparently always side with, I don’t want to give them my business. And as an aside, I can tell you that I’m a lawyer. Justice is only a dream. Not a reality. Sad, but it’s the truth.

first , i would close any accounts associated with this sale ...

can't charge back to a closed account ... they can try

all of my Ebay sales clearly state No Returns ...

this is the mentality brought on by the big box stores taking stuff back ... oh cause , i don't like that color with my bedroom walls , or some other stupid BS ... man up , make a decision and deal with it ... sorry ... ranting

what i mean is ... No , you don't get to beat up on my stuff, then ask for your money back ... no joy rides ..!!

Good eye... even better...

... the B, E and A (on the pic you say is his... I'm betting the D and G, as well) look as though they were 'through body'...

... and only the E is 'through body' on the bass you say is yours.

I hope guilt haunts them tonight, and every night forward... but I doubt it'll happen.

I think it's just the camera angle. The break doesn't seem nearly as severe on the E and A. I think it's strung the same way tbh.

My apologies if this has been mentioned already. I've seen damage a *little* similar to that caused by case candy which broke loose, specifically the key to the case lock that somehow escaped the little compartment, rattled around and then, presumably the case got dropped with the key in an unfortunate position. This would at least explain damage to the bass but not to the case.

By the way, I've never heard of UPS, Fed Ex, etc opening up a domestic bound package for inspection.
TSA regulations allow for the inspection and search of any shipments accepted, whether transported by passenger or cargo aircraft. So, it does happen, but I'm guessing that's not what happened here.

This is a typical, buy a bass for the parts replace the ones on your bass and send it back.

Of course that didn't happen and of course it was not your fault.

By the way I've been scammed before by a guy pining for a discount where he pulled up the pickguard and there was a crack which did not exist before but of course who would check under the pickguard?

And shipping it back on my dime means I'm missing out on $200 and didn't sell an instrument so you kind of between a rock and a hard place.

It's really a shame what has happened in the marketplace, it's a very untrustworthy environment.

The buyer opened it. He dropped it. Now he wants to blame it on you.
Hold your ground.
I just had a thought that would be an idea for all shippers. Include in the box a full set of photos date and time stamped just before you ship.
That seems like a good idea but sadly I don't think it's enough. I think the only way to do it is to film The Bass thoroughly while at UPS and handing it over as it goes in and is being packed in the box.

Sorry that this happened. Seems to happen all the time now.

Whenever I sell things now, I take video. I start with a good overview of the product showing damage (if any) and then I put the phone somewhere that can record me packing the box and taping it up. All in one continuous shot.

This way if something happens and I get a halfway decent customer service rep, there will be no doubt that the issue isn’t with me.

Reverb is handling the dispute. If they are anything like eBay then there is no way for buyer to when. I've sold probably 20+ basses here since 2007. All transactions went smoothly. I've sold about 10+ on reverb and have great feedback. No way I would overlook damage like that when selling a bass for a few grand. It was in new shape when I packed it up. I bought the bass brand new on MF in September. This really irks me because other than the pictures, I have no more proof. Pictures were taken a few days before shipping. I packed the bass up at home and dropped off at UPS. From not own I will video and photo bass during packing with a time stamp and time stamp when I give it to the shipping company.
Unless Reverb has changed their policies in the last year, they should work with you. You need to send them as many pictures and info showing the condition. Also tell them the buyer refuses to show you a picture with the serial number. They are pretty good about backing their sellers, or at least they used to be. I know they were bought out recently, but as long as their policies are the same, you should come out OK.

I am awfully sorry to see that and hear what happened to you. That being said, it's still a thing of beauty. I still haven't been able to buy my first bass yet but I hope I can find one as beautiful as yours. I sincerely hope everything works in your favor. Take care
