...as I said first thing is freedom in you decisions and I fully respect that...I just don't understand where is problem...you can ask buyer for agreement:
1. o.k. I can send overeseas but you will pay extra cash for shipping...o.k.?
2. If package will be lost maybe I can try to help you but it's your risk...right?

Do you agree?
1.Yes...than I can ship it to you
2.You don't?...I'm sorry...

I know there are some hunters ...we know strange emails from Nigeria: " Iwant to buy your bass I need it for my doughter living in Nigeria" etc. etc. But if some TBer want to make deal with you? Person who is for couple of years registrated on TB, person with some feedback, with web page?...on YouTube?...even he will send you money before and you will send item after you get it!!...where is the problem?
Anyway I understand some guys don't want to send items outside US ....but do they know why? I feel there are some myths about non USA countries. There is also myth "never give your account No. to anybody"... I must ask what bad can somebody do just with your account number? But also I fully respect that ...well for these situations we have Paypal or Check...I don't want to push anybody and I think I don't even plan to buy anything from Talk Bass I just feel some suspicions are pointless ...sorry my english

It's not reasonable, but certainly possible.

Buyer tells ebay/Paypal that he never recieved the item. Bingo, Paypal then automatically sides with the buyer, freezes the sellers account while "investigating" the dispute.

Paypal may choose to simply refund the buyer by confiscating funds from the sellers account. They can do that because you agreed to their terms when you opened your PP account.

myth or truth? realy I don't know if this can happend with Paypal...well then you can ask for Check...

Truth, I'm going through it right now with a seller in Japan, Paypal automatically put my account $450 in the negative until case is resolved. Unfortunately its out of USPS control once it leaves the country.

How about this...

Next time you want someone to ship gear halfway across the planet, why not offer to actually PAY them for their extra effort and potential problems that can occur.

Call it a "headache fee". Add 10% to the total price. You just might get results.

Do I hear crickets?

There is no need to be so aggressive and offensive in your posts.

I have done many deals both big and small across borders and have yet to have a problem.

I pay extra for the shipping and I accept any duties or taxes. Most of the time I can get better deals doing this than I can here in Canada anyways.

I have also shipped to the states, it is not really all that much extra effort.

I'm not surprised that you're "offended" at the notion of paying someone for their efforts. Sounds like you expect people to go an extra mile for you, gratis.

That's great, but how does that relate to those who have had issues? It doesn't.

This explains your motive, that's your business and that's fine. Everyone has motives, but apparently "some people" can't accept other people's motives when they don't conform to their own. Which is what sparked this....debate.

Of course not, because U.S. Customs doesn't take packages as hostages. Conversely, Canadian Customs often does. They've done it to me more than once.

Big hassle, not worth it for me. Others may never have an issue, or may enjoy stress. That's their business and that's fine.

If I was selling and someone offered extra to ship international that would red flag it straight away.

Sellers doing the CONUS only thing are doing it out of ignorance in my opinion. International mail is as reliable as any US domestic courier.

All three basses I've had shipped were taken hostage and released unharmed on payment of Customs duties. No biggie.

Strawman.

your style of writing is very aggressive and confrontational. there is no need to get so worked up over a discussion. chill out man.

That's great, but how does that relate to those who have had issues? It doesn't.

Out of 15 transactions I have not had a single problem.

No I think this discussion was sparked because alot of people do tend to think it is more difficult, or they will have to go out of there way to ship something overseas. when it really is no big deal. Hey if someone says US only I just don't ask. thats there perogative. although a couple times I have asked, and ended up doing a deal that worked out fine.

out of the 15 transactions I have done on talkbass not once has canadian customs held something up. Not even mentioning the other times I have ordered from the states off ebay, amazon etc.

not saying problems don't happen.

exactly.

On customs duties.

A good buyer and a good seller will know the customs policies.

I know in Canada we are part of NAFTA and that due to that, and Canadian or american made music equipment can freely be traded across the border without and duties being applied.

you will still have to pay any applicable taxes though.

I have successfully shipped guitars overseas. I make it clear that the buyer pays all taxes, duties, etc. Also, expect a long wait for it to clear customs and tracking through USPS suck. I let them know I will not be responsible for any issues once it leaves my hands.

I can understand when some seller hesitate ship overseas but shipping between USA/Canada?...come on!

I know. It's ridiculous, and yet there's a problem shipping from the US to Canada now and then.

That problem is with Canadian Customs, who for some reason, like to intervene arbitrarily. Apparently, the whole "free trade" concept doesn't agree with them.

A couple of rides on that merry-go-round is enough for anyone, trust me.

Yes, they will have to go out of their way to ship overseas, this is obvious. The question is whether or not it's worth the effort and elevated risk.

Sellers who've had previous shipping problems will likely choose to avoid the known pitfalls. There is nothing you're going to say that will convince them that their negative experiences didn't happen.

OTOH, overseas shippers who've been lucky so far may consider overseas shipping to be "no big deal".

I think you'll find that Conus-only sellers are not "ignorant" or "paranoid", and may in fact be "good" sellers.

I also don't think filling out a customs form is "going out of their way".

Neither do I. But running back and forth to the PO with my package to get the correct shipping cost, is.

And trying to soothe an anxious buyer, who is convinced his bass got lost or stolen, and wants me to file a claim with USPS. When in fact, it's secretly being held in Canadian Customs for 5 weeks, with me calling USPS offices and US Customs trying to solve the mystery.

Or when I have to return a misrepresented amp to a Canadian Nemesis/Eden dealer, who insists that I call it a "gift" or he wont refund me. So I do it and eat $65 return shipping, and naturally the amp gets held up for weeks.

It took me 4 months to get my $650 back from this clown, and Canadian Customs only made things worse. Interestingly, when I bought the amp, it got here in only 4 days. Why? Because there's no problem shipping from canada to the US. Do you not see the disparity here?

So yeah, shipping internationally from the USA may require "going out of your way" at times.

In the future, you can track your packages across the border.

Once your item is in canadian customs, you can use the Canada Post website to track it in canada. if the package is stopped in customs, the tracking info usualy states that it is in customs.

Not speaking for ALL, or EVERY DEAL, but wait til you get that ONE that refuses to pay the import tax/fees...... and then if you want it shipped back, it's at your expense. Sometimes that 'expense' is more than the price you were selling for - sometimes. But when that happens, wouldn't it make you feel like you should just take the item you're selling and throw it into a burning cauldron?

Yeah, I'm jaded.....
as long as those fees are discussed and agreed up front there should be no problems.....and at least as far as canookistan is concerned you can self broker to avoid the fees, but taxes must be paid.....a statement of who is responsible for which fees in the ad would go a long way....i learned how,and even proposed a sticky on the subject....i've missed out on a few good lower 48 only deals too....
