Short scale semi-hollow body build

After I get it all sanded it will be "more", but there's very little left by the control cavity cover, so I don't think I can actually do much more of a roundover than this.

I put a maple cap on the headstock. I went with a single piece that has some ambrosia on it. Sorry I didn't take any pics of the actual piece. I'm going to recess the tuners a bit.

I snuck into the shop a few times today then spent an hour in there tonight. I got the headstock cut and drilled. I adjusted the left side after this picture to make it closer to the right hand side.

I also tried dyeing another piece of wood to see if I could replicate the color I got from before. I was pretty successful, maybe a bit lighter, but without a finish on it, it's hard to say exactly, maybe I'll put some finish on just to calm my mind that I can hit that same red color.

I agree with you 100%, I'm trying to expand my horizons, but boy do I just want to put Tru Oil on it. I don't know if I have the guts to dye it, honestly.

Instead of working in the build off I continued on with this one. I don't think I'm going to be able to just drop it. I guess I'll work on both at the same time, but I'm pretty excited to get this one done.

The neck pocket/body intersection on the bass side was bugging me, this took way longer than it should have to figure out what was wrong and fix it. I'm satisfied now.

Similar with the headstock/neck junction, something didn't look right up there, although this was taken care of pretty quickly on the oscillating drum sander

And I worked on dye coloring again. I think I've got it now, this looks right on my phone, but here on the computer it looks more orange than it does in person. I started mixing dyes and that seemed to do the trick, this is three applications of different dyes with sand back in between. It's still terrifying, but I think I'm going to do the dye.

I think that last part is experiential, hard to watch someone else and understand that. Oh and the last part of it is learning to wear gloves any time the dye container is open. I wonder how long my fingers will be red?

Done that many times. Honey Amber dye on the fingers makes you look like a smoker.

I spent a good two hours scraping and sanding. I think I'm there. I could be staining tomorrow. I'm sure this won't look much different than other pics, but it looks really nice now.

I mounted the bridge to validate the neck pocket depth. All good. This is a bit high, but it puts the ears of the pickups just flush with the top, perfect.

Make sure to leave enough room around the knobs so you can get your pinky around them. In my last build, the knobs are too close so I can only turn them with my hand approaching from the top I am thinking about redoing the knobs with a smaller diameter to get some more space back.

It is going to get dyed. I will likely make my own, smaller, knobs for this. I probably won't get to dye until Wednesday.
