Short scale Stingray!

The clear pickguard is in production. I'll snap some pics when it comes in.
Step two would be the black bridge and some black knobs.
Thanks Adee for the naked view of yours!

Hi Dave, Really pleased you a loving it, can't wait to see the clear pickguard in place!!
I need to give credit to @AjCalderon for the naked view, his mods look amazing
Cheers Ade

Does anyone here have both the US and Sterling version? Just wondering how they compare.
I love my Starry Night so much, I might want a "knock-around" version so it stays really pretty.

Does anyone know how this Starry Night finish is likely to hold up? I haven't bumped it into anything yet, and don't really want to...but it happens sometimes on stage or at rehearsals.

Last year (pre-covid) I had my bass on a stand up on the stage between sets, and a guy from the sound crew yanked a cable, which caught my stand, and slammed my Mustang P/J bass to the floor, and bounced it a few feet. No serious damage done, but accidents like that do happen.

Do it! You won’t regret it. I have both the Starry Night and the SBMM version in Olympic White. Both of mine have rosewood fretboards I kinda wish I had gotten maple on my SBMM because they ended up being so similar I think having a maple fretboard on the SBMM would make not being able to get both the starry night AND vintage sunburst a little less painful lol.

My Starry Night is definitely much lighter and better balanced I LOVE the neck heel on it compared to the SBMM but that not too say anything is wrong with the SBMM one. You’ll want to upgrade the tuners on the SBMM and if you go with a lightweight option it’ll put it closer to EBMM range balance wise.

the pots and wiring could benefit from being upgraded but I really like the import pickup and find it to be really similar to the EBMM slightly less detail maybe. I don’t plan to replace the pickup I love the vibe it has.

jumping back and forth between the instruments feels very similar and takes no adjustment that’s for sure. I plan to upgrade the pots and switches to the same as my American and it setup a whole step down with some heavier strings to give it its own vibe.

there is a good chance if I like the colors next year that I do the same thing I did this year and buy the import and domestic version but this time maple necks because I have a problem lol.

Well said.AJ.
I have the the burst with maple neck. And white with rosewood....if i get another next year it will be maple . Easy to go back and forth between them ...

For the people thinking of replacing the black pickguard with clear im happy to buy one of the black pickguards off you.

It's funny...Once I play a single bass for a few weeks, and really get used to the feel of it, I find it uncomfortable to change to another bass...and it takes me a few days to adjust. This is true even if they are both SS, and have about the same sized neck. It just feels awkward. That doesn't mean that there's something wrong with the one I switch off too. If I'd play that one for a few weeks, and then switch back, I'd experience the same thing.

The reach of my left hand to hit certain fret positions is different. Where I attack the strings with pick or fingers for a certain sound is different. The bridge is in a different location (affecting palm muting). Stuff like that. I play a lot by feel. Half the time I'm not really looking at the bass at all.

My most common everyday players for the past few years have been a pair of Gibson SG basses I have. One is a "120th Anniversary" worn cherry finish (bought used $600), the other is a limited edition, flamed top version. They play and sound almost exactly the same, and I can switch between them with zero problems. The $600 red one is a knock-around bass that usually goes to rehearsals, or those "questionable part of town" gigs. The really pretty (much more expensive) flame special edition goes to the nicer gigs, and studio sessions where their might be a video or photo-op. I like having that option. I even have a $100 (used) Epiphone EB-0 version to drag along on vacations. It feels almost the same, but with a slightly narrower neck...1.5 EB-0 vs 1.6 SG's. Sounds TOTALLY different though.

I'm really getting comfortable with my EBMM SS Starry Night now, and I really love the versatility of tones it can produce. It can sound like virtually any bass, on any track I'm trying to cover, and change in seconds. More versatile than my much-loved SG's in that respect. If this becomes my everyday player (replacing the SG's) which is likely, I'll want a knock-around that's easy to transition too. From what you're describing, the Sterling sounds like it'd be that bass.

Wow am I a creature of habit!
Thanks for the feedback!

Since the "Starry Night" is a limited edition bass, I'll likely hold on to all the original hardware...but thanks!
I'm 99% sure you can get a black one made for <$40 though.

I too prefer the look of the maple neck...so I'd probably get a blue one...then maybe get it refinished into some wild color...like purple sparkle shown here... (with another clear PG of course)

ernie ball will sell you a new pickguard I think they’re like $35 and offer a white as well I believe.

My original pick guard was blemished so they sent me a new one no problem. If you want it for your SBMM the fit is slightly different on the neck but a few places have the stencil now. I got both of mine for both mine short scales from Precision guitars on reverb.

That would be so cool! Yea I held onto my original guard and keeping my fingers crossed they eventually do a short scale with black hardware so I can get a proper Ernie Ball control panel for it so that it will all be “stock” although a one off since it’s not how it was originally designed but I can’t see myself ever selling it so I’m not too worried. I have a feeling they’re going to have more than one color option next year due to the increased popularity this year.

fingers crossed for a BFR model in the future.

@AjCalderon`s mods look very nice and makes the bass unique (at least until others start copying it). However, the stock `shiny`stuff has its own vibe and not at all inferior. Now get on with relicing it ;-)

Question...
Does anyone here have a schematic or wiring diagram for this bass?

I'd like to reverse the wiring on the boost switch / volume knob. I haven't pulled the control plate off. I'm guessing it's not a big deal, but I wouldn't mind having a schematic anyway.

Maybe it's just me, but I like it running in the boosted position, but I don't really like the knob sticking out that way. Perhaps someone has already done this?

Dave O.

I'm guessing not, however you 'could' push it to boost, loosen the grub screw and lower the knob, there is room for it to drop a little. Worth a go and no alts needed !

How's the clear pickguard coming along?

Cheers Ade
Good idea!...I'll try doing just that.

No sign of the clear PG yet. Been a few weeks. I guess I should check on it, and make sure mine didn't drop through the cracks somehow.

Just picked up one of the SBMM short scale models. It's quite nice.

I'm very surprised at how affordable it was considering the extra features. The wheel truss and mahogany body, for example. Also where else can you find a shortie with 22 frets in this price range? I quite like how they slimmed down the body.

The G&L Fallout bass or a Mustang was in the running but this SBMM looked a cut above in terms of features for the dollar.

Anyway, this does seem like a great mod platform. I wouldn't touch the US made version but these SBMM models are perfect.

I'm not really getting along with the boost myself. Would be great to wire this like a L1000, put OMG mode in there for series (though might need a different rotary switch). I'm not sure what to do with the push/pull yet if I rewire this.
