Maybe it’s just the kinds of gigs I play, but I have yet to play in front of a bar or club audience that cares if the band wears shorts. I’m talking your typical cover band playing a bar gig. As I have said before, a wedding or corporate outing is a completely different situation. You play for the audience in front of you. You don’t play a supper club in shorts or wear a baseball cap. But a Friday night classic rock gig? The audience does NOT care in my experience. Never met one that does.

You're exactly right. Is it appropriate all the time? No. We've worn ties for wedding gigs when asked, black pants and red T's once when requested. But most of the time it just doesn't matter.

What does matter is how so many people on here feel they are 100% correct, it's your opinion, that's all. And I'll stand by mine. Black shorts, khaki shorts, no matter, we get as many gigs as we want and walk away paid and happy. That's a win!

We have a strict no shorts policy. But, I’m not against rolling my jeans up when playing at outdoor beach bars.

Kilts do work, but I wore a 'tank' kilt (8-9 yards of wool)which wasn't particularly cool. Guitar player at the time wore cargo shorts almost exclusively. Punky/Metal type thing, so it was okay.

Since I lost stuff in the fire a year or so ago I've made a decision to never again wear cargo shorts.
Only wore them because 'er indoors bought them. Lots of alternatives out there. Enjoying golf shorts a lot.

I am 66 with ugly, very white Wisconsin legs, and now adorned with knee replacement scars on both. I have worn shorts onstage once.

We played on the 4th of July in a north woods bar and eatery that had no AC and no fans. It was 100 outside and much hotter inside. I wear shorts for setup and usually change to jeans for the gig. This night it was just too hot.

Our lead singer was a stunning woman...a professional body builder and model. Shelby.

The leader of the group said, “Dallman, those are some ugly legs.” I said, “Kim, If anyone is looking at my legs, Shelby isn’t doing her job.”

Shorts and a baseball cap...worst look ever.

A little over ten years ago I suffered a heat stroke that damn near killed me and left me seriously ill and unable to work. At the time I owned and operated a landscaping company and simply had not hydrated enough. It is an oversight that I regret and the ramifications plague me to this day. I was able to go back to work outside in the sun about five years ago. On a side note I now drink plenty of water everyday and the world is my urinal - but I digress.

During the cooler months I wear jeans on stage but now that the weather is warming up I wear shorts. I won't apologize for it and I could not care less what anyone else thinks of how I look. I am in this to perform music and for the audience to have a great time. We have a show tonight in Elkhart and the forecast has the temps in the 80's - I know it will be 90+ in the bar and so shorts and lots of water are my standard.

I’ve always worn shorts at gigs.
Never hurt me or the audience doing so.
Playing outdoors in the summer at +30 Celsius will do that.
Now if it’s a high paying gig with a dress code desired then by all means whatever you want me to wear.
