Maybe it’s just the kinds of gigs I play, but I have yet to play in front of a bar or club audience that cares if the band wears shorts. I’m talking your typical cover band playing a bar gig. As I have said before, a wedding or corporate outing is a completely different situation. You play for the audience in front of you. You don’t play a supper club in shorts or wear a baseball cap. But a Friday night classic rock gig? The audience does NOT care in my experience. Never met one that does.
You're exactly right. Is it appropriate all the time? No. We've worn ties for wedding gigs when asked, black pants and red T's once when requested. But most of the time it just doesn't matter.
What does matter is how so many people on here feel they are 100% correct, it's your opinion, that's all. And I'll stand by mine. Black shorts, khaki shorts, no matter, we get as many gigs as we want and walk away paid and happy. That's a win!
