Shorts...

Frankly, I don't care what you do or don't like to wear for everyday. If you're playing in a band in front of an audience, in my seldom-humble opinion, you should consider your clothing to be part of the band's presentation and performance. The audience does.

Maybe it’s just the kinds of gigs I play, but I have yet to play in front of a bar or club audience that cares if the band wears shorts. I’m talking your typical cover band playing a bar gig. As I have said before, a wedding or corporate outing is a completely different situation. You play for the audience in front of you. You don’t play a supper club in shorts or wear a baseball cap. But a Friday night classic rock gig? The audience does NOT care in my experience. Never met one that does.

Does that depend on where you live? For example, here in New Zealand, "sneakers" are like the Converse canvas things, although you can get leather ones. More of a "street shoe" thing. I'd wear those on stage (in fact I sometimes do) but I find Chuck Taylors are too narrow for my feet so I wear Jack Purcells. "Running shoes" are different. Designed for a sport-specific purpose. I wouldn't wear them on stage. But that's just me and I don't expect anybody else to conform to my arbitrary style choices.

I agree...Chuck Taylors are cool and stylish. Running shoes not so much.

100%. This really says it all. The way to appear professional while playing and wearing shorts, is to be professional, play, and wear shorts.

So that's the big reward? "Oh, you've hit level 13 of rock stardom, achievement unlocked... you can wear shorts now"? That's so ridiculous. I know you allowed for some exceptions, but basically it's like saying "only rich people should wear shorts". What kind of class warfare nonsense is that?
You don't have to like it. But who's going to refuse to book Metallica if they wear shorts? When you have FU money, you can do what you want. And really, you can do what you want if you don't. But if you don't have FU money you risk losing some income. Its not class warfare...it's truth.

This guy is a pretty good bass player:
