Angus Young wearing shorts is OK. Famous bands wearing shorts is OK. And quite honestly, even cover bands can get away with it on a lot of their gigs. Personally, though, I hate the look. It's like they don't put any thought into presentation whatsoever.

If your legs are horribly scarred by burns that you received when you were young you would never wear shorts in public ever... I haven't worn a pair of shorts in almost 50 years now.

So just point out... Some of us do care what people think or have to deal with. We chose to spare ourselves the uncomfortable staring and let people just enjoy the music that we make even if it means being a bit uncomfortable.

Oh, and to me image does matter. If your bandmates look like a bunch of slobs...

I don't understand why people forget that playing music live in front of an audience is a SHOW. It's theater as well as music. There is an audible and a visual element to the performance. Clothing should at least be compatible with the setting, and should be at least neutral, if not attractive, to the audience. It should fit the context of the event.

If you care about giving the audience a good experience, then you should consider the theater aspect. Whether you always wear shorts" or not, if they're not appropriate for the venue and the music, don't wear shorts!!

I've played wearing everything from a white dinner jacket with tie, dress shirt and black slacks to a Fender rayon shirt imprinted with semi-nekkid ladies riding guitars, shorts and tennis shoes (surf band). When I play country, I wear a western style shirt with embroidery and black jeans.

Frankly, I don't care what you do or don't like to wear for everyday. If you're playing in a band in front of an audience, in my seldom-humble opinion, you should consider your clothing to be part of the band's presentation and performance. The audience does.

Unless you look like a total wanker, in which case the person hanging around with you could justifiably be concerned over guilt by association or the concern of having to suffer the embarrassment of a fool. In either case it is a fashion tragedy for both parties concerned.

I agree. With respect to the sneakers thing, I am more of a black jeans and black boots and black t shirt and black leather jacket kinda guy, but I’ve worn Chucks from time to time. Depends what kinda band you are in tho, I’m in a rock band so whatever.

My problem with shorts is that most of the time when I see people wear them on stage, they are part of an overall look that says, "I don't care what I look like." Other people's experiences may be different.

I hope so, because by the time next year ends I'll be 60 and I wear shorts all the time. It gets hot here in summer and I walk a lot - e.g. I live about an hour's walk from my local shops but I'll often walk rather than take the car - and at my age I appreciate the comfort. I do own one pair of cargo shorts, but most of mine are more "tailored". These were the last pair I bought (picture from the retailer's website, so these are not my knees):

I'll wear shorts gigging, but only in places I'd wear them socially anyway. I'd wear shorts playing an outdoor summer gig, just like I'd wear them going to watch an outdoor summer show. I wouldn't wear shorts to play a late night gig in a bar, just like I wouldn't wear them going to meet friends in a bar in the evening.
