Wearing shorts onstage looks very unprofessional. Unless your name is Flea or Steve Harris, or Bon Scott or John McVie, you're going to look like an amateur.

Temps in summer are sometimes 110 plus. I'm wearing shorts thank you. No one (except my fashion maven friend Pieter Mordyke) has ever walked out of a show because I'm wearing shorts. And I may just rock a kilt this year for the heck of it.
PS. Who cares. Is the music good? Does the bass player and the band do good work?

I’d like to see a map of those saying “Yes” and those saying “No”. Overlay average temps on that map, and I’ll bet you’ll see a trend.
I believe there’s a huge difference between indoor and outside gigs. I live in North Carolina, where we’ve already had days over 95 degrees, and it’s not even summer yet. Humidity here is also awful. When we play outdoors in spring or summer, everybody’s in shorts. Playing indoors is altogether different, and I agree that shorts look unprofessional. My go-to look for outside gigs is khaki shorts and a polo shirt, and a big electric fan. I don’t love it, but it sure beats heat stroke.
I was actually pondering this issue before seeing this post, because I have a couple of outdoor shows coming up. One is Friday, when the temperature here is forecasted to be in the high 90s; the next is July 3. Both are at a big VA hospital, midday, under a shade tent. Normally I’m a black jeans or black trousers guy. For occasions like these, though, I usually allow myself the exception of wearing shorts.
But here’s the issue: My old, sun-damaged legs are so dang good looking I’m concerned they will distract from the two gorgeous women singers up front. Please, Bass Intelligentsia, what is the appropriate solution?

I wear shorts 24/7 because it’s a PITA to put pants on, I’ll only wear pants for formal gigs or events such as weddings etc.

Same here. I also live in Raleigh and it is simply miserable to play many of the outdoor gigs during the summer. I'll be playing tonight in Little Washington and I plan to wear khaki shorts and a polo. And I'll bring a fairly large floor standing fan! We start at 6 p.m. so I hope the temperature will be down to the high 80s by then.
