The maturity of that response in reply to the absolutely correct advice you were given by people with experience -and I know there was at least one lawyer who replied that you had no real case in there - is only matched by that of your behaviour in the first place.

Your "friends and room-mate" bailed you out - I can tell you, if it had been me and I suspect most others here, you would neither have got the money nor still be considered a friend. There would also be a less than glowing recommendation going around the local band scene as to your levels of commitment, ability and maturity.

If you want to ask a body of experienced people for advice, I'd suggest you at least try and behave with a little respect. Age is no excuse for bad manners.

You're 19 years old, you hold a full time job, and you were able to save enough to cough up $800 for a recording session.


YOU'RE AN ADULT!!! Act like one.

Hell, I played with a 16 year old last night who shows more integrity than I've read from you in this one thread. So the whole "I'm a teenager" thing just doesn't fly.

Um, no. Dropping band commitments on the floor will eventually guarantee you won't become an "older musician" unless it's in your bedroom.

In any event, OP's reaction here is too little, too late. He should have declined the session offer in the first place. He has every right to ask for the $160 back, understanding the odds of getting it are slim to none.

Your word counts, and going back on it is a career (or hobby) limiting move in this business.

The way he said it made it sound like his cut was $800. I'm sure it was Mommy's money anyways.

I guess you have the luxury of laughing at the real answers that adults offer in response to questions of responsibility and commitment. You sound like kind of a lame dude overall. Best of luck, I wouldn't want to have to rely on you.

Never- ever pay to record for a band that makes no money. (which would be most of them) Let me guess "original- metal" recordings?

Yeah, that had caught my attention too. One post it's a bunch of people who aren't really friends so he's fine with quitting, next post the band is all friends so of course they'll pay him back money they're not obligated to.

Well, congratulations on getting it back. All's well that ends well. You have generous friends, or acquaintances, or whatever they are. Hope the date went well.

I believe $800 was his share of what would have been a $4000 studio bill.

To the OP: it worked out in your favor this time. But I would take to heart the reaction you got here on TB. In the future, be careful about what you commit to, and where you put your money. Next time, when you're older and have bills of your own to pay, it may be money you can't afford to lose, committed to people who can't afford to give it back to you.

Yeah, didn't have my twisted grammar hat on.

"I gave the band $800, which was 1/5 of the cost of recording."

is much clearer than

"I gave the band 1/5 of the cost of recording, which was $800."

You can read the latter either way.

But that seems de rigueur for this thread. :D

Everybody is in a financial rut, but they come up with the money to record and they come up with with $800 to pay you back?

Sorry bud but your story has more holes than a pound of Swiss cheese.

My immediate thought is:

No guitarist can play bass the way a bass should be played

A good guitarist sounds like an ameture bass player

ALWAYS play bass on a recording, never let a guitarist do it because "they should be able to"
