This doesn't make any sense, you felt you would be kicked out after you gave them $800, so you gave them $800 and quit???

Something is not right with this story.

Had I read this post I probably wouldn't have even responded. This story is most likely not true. It just doesn't add up. Thank you for providing me with the mild entertainment while I wait in this doctors office. But if you do get that 800 back you should donate it to talkbass. We all could have been reading an intelligent informative post instead of this silly, made up story.

Ok, how about Carol Kaye?
Keef laid down a lot of great bass lines on a lot of hit songs in the studio. Ronnie did a lot of good work over his career too. They may not be "great" but they are darn good.

The guy made a mistake, bad decision etc etc whatever you want to call it and came here asking advices not to be condemned . This is no the Inquisition! The guy decided to quit and let the guitarist record (better according to himself) Actually those guys are more into Legal about asking you to do your part. About the reimburse, is all up to them, if they want consider yourself lucky, and if they don't thats fine too. The don't owe you anything. As a i see this thread is all gone. Just a piece of advice: If you knew they were going to kick you out BEFORE being involved in recording why did you pay for it? It doesn't make sense. Not judging you, but some lesson learned!

Maybe because you have a job and a little money is the reason they had you in the band. It doesn't sound like you contributed anything else (weed maybe?).

Well when you ask a question of grownups, you get a grownup answer.

Don't blame this on age, it has nothing to do with age, it has to do wth maturity. I didn't pull this kind of nonsense when I was 13, but I've played with 40 year olds that were no better.

Sorry but I'm not seeing the positive to your side of the story. Unless I'm misinterpreting what's occurred, The band planned a recording project, collected the money to make it happen, set up a schedule to record, booked the facility, and you bailed because you didn't want to make the drive. And you don't want to create any drama.

As a producer, I would spend the $800 you contributed to the project on hiring a session bassist
to play your parts.
And as a band leader, I'd offer the session bassist a full time position in the band.

Keith, Jimi & Ron would be great bass players if they wanted to. Their bass lines are better than 99% of bass lines recorded by full time bassists.

Another case in point: George Harrison's bass lines rival McCartney's. Just listen to Maxwell's Silver Hammer & Old Brown Shoe.

Ok - I will make my way through some more of this thread - but right now - I am on the OP.

So let me get this right -

1) you are part of a band that wants to record
2) you agree to record and spring $800 for recording
3) then because the recording place is 3 hours away, you don't want to go record
4) but you are the bassist and they want you to record and they tell you this. Why should the guitarists play the bass line?
5) you get angry and quit because you can't have your way
6) you want your money back
