After schlepping a backup am to hundreds of gigs just to watch is sit there all lonely not getting used, I sold it and added a Sansamp pedal with a DI out. The DI out on that pedal is my amp backup now. And instead of bringing one bass to a gig I bring two. I rationalize it by bringing something tonally different. I used to do a "P" and a "J" but now I bring a 2HH and a fretless. I've never needed to finish a show with the backup but it's fun to play the fretless for a few songs just to change things up.

I think it was already mentioned but assuming you have other cheaper backup gear covered, cables, wireless batteries (if you use one), microphone (if you sing) etc.

In my experience, the bass is more likely to fail than an amp. But it's definitely a good idea to have some sort of back up for both. My suggestion is spend less on the bass (Squier, SX, Ibanez Talman) and then get any of the pedals that give you a good DI out that can connect you to the PA. So for the price of a "good" bass you have coverage in place, then you can save $$ to upgrade those as you want.
