Should I change the pickguard?

Id get black. Ive been meaning to get a black pickguard for my P special (same as yours but maple and blizzard pearl) I hate the gold.

Red tort is just hot - if ever I puck up a Precision, P-copy, or my dream Tony Franklin signature I'll be slapping one onto mine .

You might also want to consider "Silver Tort" - a great combination of giving the black finish some color.

+1 on the tort, or any color other then gold I think they really dress up a bass nice, I hate gold anything but that is my own personal taste but love your bass [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I had to vote "Carrots" for several reasons.

First, I think going with a gold anodized aluminum pickguard is your first choice. Personally I almost always go with brown tort and on black it would look real classy. However, the gold anodized guard would give you another great look on black that isn't too far a change from what you have now.



Since you don't have my next choice, the carrots vote carries on a little further. You didn't mention a BLACK pearl pickguard, which I also thinks looks great. I did that on my Strat:

Yes... tort looks great with black.

Tort looks great with black and a rosewood neck - maple, not so much, IMO. It's what I have now and am planning to go back to black.

I say white pearl, that's just my opinion. I don't really like the gold pickguard that comes with the bass.

I went through this problem a while ago. Many places will make the pickguard you want, only they need the current pickguard on your bass so they can copy the exact thing, which takes time. If the P-bass is your only bass, you probably won't be happy to go three-five weeks with no guard.

What I did was buy a normal P-bass guard and drilled another hole in it. It looks a little bit clustered, but all the knobs work fine and it's not really all that noticeable.

What I probably should have done (and this is probably your best bet) is just order a P-guard from Warmth or Pickguardian or Pickguard Heaven or wherever, but ask them not to drill any holes for knobs at all, and just drill them yourself when you it.

I understand what you're saying, but how many people are going to see the guard up close? I think it looks great in the pics. So, I voted to leave it as-is.

Only one person is going to see it up close ... the person asking the question in the OP !

I wouldn't be changing a p/g for the benefit of the audience, I'd be doing it for myself, so the question seems pretty valid to me .
