Last fall, I found a Yamaha fretless 5 in a pawn shop for $200. I'd never had a 5 or a fretless. With a good set of GHS flats, I had a decent 5er. It took a few sessions to get use to playing a 5. The rest of the band were very patient as they were really digging the tone I was getting. A couple of weeks ago, I picked up a Squier Active Jazz Deluxe V for $380 with tax in. I replaced the stock Fender Stainless with TI Jazz flats. When I went to rehearsal, I got a little bit of "gear-snobbery" from the guitarist over it being a Squier and all that. I asked him to put it on hold until after we ran through a set or two.
A few tunes into rehearsal, the drummer asked what I was doing differently. He said he could feel his set shaking from the low end I was putting out. Not volume - bass, and I had only hit the active during a guitar solo.
When we took a break, the guitarist complimented me on the new addition.
Yes, I had a little trouble with the transition from 4 to 5 at first. Will I gig with my Squier? Absolutely !
Maybe not as cheap as Mekanic would prefer, but good value.
