Should I Lend out my Rig?

My guitarist was trying to tell me that if I lent them my rig it would guarantee us a spot playing with them sometime in the future... IMHO, definitely not worth it, and we ended up playing with them later that same night anyways. It`s just funny how much he sucks up to those guys.

I`ve actually thought about it... But if you want to talk about unreasonable maybe I should tell you guys the story of him ringing up a $140 bar tab in one night.

I also don`t know about the DI. From my understanding they are mostly an instrumental band so they don`t use PA support for most shows - or at least not for frat parties.

I was once asked if Eddie Gomez could use my upright bass. I didn't exactly refuse, but I told the organizer that he could keep me on call while he looked for a better bass. My bass would have been an insult to Mr. Gomez.

Idol worship is a strange thing which, IMHO, is a symptom of psychotic dellusions, especially when aimed at somebody utterly devoid of idolic qualities.

I have some friends who idolize guys in the local band scene who are complete drunken losers. I don't get it. Personally, your guitard sounds like a very odd individual.

He is pretty weird.

When we were choosing songs to cover I suggested Traveling Without Moving by Jamiroquai. Not a very well known song in the states, but it`s pretty catchy to anyone who hasn`t heard it before, it`s very danceable, and the parts seem fun for everyone involved. He said it was "too weird" to cover and people "wouldn`t get it" :eyebrow:

In response, he suggested we cover Roses are Free by Ween. If you haven`t heard it before...enjoy...



I dunno, you guys tell me what you think drunk college chicks would rather dance to.

I mean, I'd love to cover Ween, but it would be a strange choice in almost any situation. Jamiroquai would go over well most of the time though.

I played a basement show the other day and some people asked me if they could use my bass and my amp later in the night. There were 2 reasons I declined:
-Never met these people before
-JUST finished getting my new (to me) amp fixed up

They at least asked me directly after I finished playing. However, I just don't get how you can have someone playing bass in a band and just not have any equipment for them. It's strange how often this happens.

Phish has.

Which leads me to another topic. The guy is a total Phish head. I mean literally. The guy built his pedal board to reflect Trey`s.

Two modded Tube Screamers - Check
Boomerang Phaser - Check
Analog Man Sustain - Check
Whammy 2 - Nope, he got a Whammy 4 but that`s only because it was the only one he could find... He still claims the Whammy 2 is superior to all the other ones... I wonder why :rollno:

Granted, I can`t look too far into it because many people buy pedals that their idols use because they want to acquire a similar sound, but still...

But back to covers, every song he`s suggested so far (with exception to about 3) have either been Phish songs or songs Phish has covered :rollno:

Again, I can`t hate too hard on someone wanting to be similar to their idols... but at the same time it`s like, "Why can`t we just be us and not try to be them? Why can`t we cover songs other members in the band want to cover?"

You think they wouldn't sell your equipment to get home if you had loaned it to them?

I suggest that you let every band that your in from now into the future, "Please don't ask me to loan my equipment out". I don't loan my stuff and I don't borrow stuff. Period. Please don't volunteer me for anything unless you check with me first. Otherwise the answer will be a flat out "no".

Did I think they would... eh... not necessarily, but the thought did cross my mind once I heard what they had spent their whole earnings on.

Never lend gear. Never ever lend gear that will be at a frat party. Can't fit it in the car ? Sorry I work very hard for my gear AND the vehicle to lug it around in. My answer is no NO NO NO !

yeah , I could see letting a young band I was playing a show with play with my rig. It is always really fun to see some teenage kid get to play through a real bass rig instead of an underpowered combo for the first time.
I could also see letting a good friend, like a former or current band mate borrow my rig if they were opening for some great act and their own stuff got stolen/burned/isnt good enough.
but a friend of a friends band playing a paying gig at a flipping frat house?
I used to do sound for a lot of UC Berkeley housing co-op parties.
Total pandemonium. No respect for gear or property. Lots of topless people.
Way too much alcohol. Cables FILTHY.
Having done sound for thrash metal, hardcore punk rock, blues clubs and frat parties I would take the lower paying punk/blues shows over the higher paying frat parties!
Also, quite often these kind of things are outdoors which only makes it more likely that dude will crank your amp and blow a driver.

I made the mistake of loaning a bass once to the brother of a very close friend. I haven't seen the bass, or the brothers since. They literally vanished. The guy who borrowed my bass eventually went to prison. Seems he had quite the lucrative quad bike theft ring. The friend developed quite the drug habit. Last I heard, he had pawned everything that he owned (including his car title) for more drugs and was living with a stripper.
I'm sure my bass found it's way to a pawn shop. I never would have loaned it out but I had known these guys for several years. They were close family friends. And the brother wanted to borrow my bass for an extended time because he wanted to learn to play and he was saving for his own. Since I had three or four at the time, I decided to help him out. So I realistically didn't expect to get it back for a few months. Well, during that time he moved away (and eventually landed in prison). His brother (my friend) had no idea where he was. Eventually, he vanished as well.
I wrote it off finally. Now, I will not loan any gear to anyone for any reason. That's my set in stone policy.

It`s stories like this that made me question lending out my rig in the first place. My guitarist just doesn`t understand that stuff like this happens. Honestly, he has always seemed to have a problem grasping reality and the not so pleasant side of it.
