Well then call me an idiot and ban me!

Let's face it, there is a modest amount of effect that the wood causes compared to say a string or a pickup or the amp, but then so does barometric pressure and smoke and humidity and other things not even connected to the instrument. I think the complaint has to do with the over the top opinions from people who don't know stuff from shinola, and worse yet from people who should. :hiding:

Someone who has built ONE bass from scratch has that much more experience than someone who has built zero basses, and it seems that most of the pontificating and speculation about wood and tone comes from people who have built none. So far, I've completed one bass from scratch, and two necks out of different woods for that same bass. I've now got an opinion on what woods I'm going to use for the new bass I'm working on now, and if I find that my experience may help someone with less experience than me, then I will present it, just as I learned from other peoples experiences. That's what this forum is for. If that somehow bothers you or brings out troll-like tendencies, maybe you should find another community. This one is functioning fine.

Please don't take this further down the road that was so obviously not intended.

While perhaps you could argue with the wording or the strenuousness of it, Wilser has every right to express his frustration with the repetition of a topic he perhaps feels has been beaten to death (my words and assumptions). AFAIK, there are no plans to ban discussion of the relationship between wood and tone. There are no plans to ban people for discussing it. There always the option of banning people for bashing eachother for their beliefs.

If it'll make anyone feel better, I'll be happy to compile a list of links to previous threads on the topic (and sticky it), but I will not create a list which is biased...i.e. one which is only made up of links to threads which support the idea of a relationship between wood and tone or one which links to threads of the opposite ideology.

perhaps a sticky that is dedicated and has the topic on it's thread subject line could help?

maybe make it bold, blinking, red and size 36pt font? (alright, alright, that was uncalled for). ;)

I was referring to that link but I could not think of a better place to put it.
What I meant to say is that when a person asks questions that are answered in that informative thread someone should refer them to the thread.

make a sticky suming up all the things talked over and over, and have the mods delete threads like that, if it already covered in the stickky, and point the poster to that sticky. and then if there are any more questions, wilser can hunt them down, smack them into head with different kinds of wood, and ask them wich sounded best to them.;)

Underlying the tone discussions there is a foundation of undeniable fact since the laws of physics apply. These scientific truths are overlaid with endless permutations of the effect that materials and construction will have which is where the art of the luthier holds sway. All of this will have further layers of complexity superimposed by further endless permutations of electronics, effects, amps and cabs and the playing style of the artist. Finally, the whole shebang will be filtered through the personal taste of the player or listener.

Given that all of these endless permutations of physics, art, craft and taste exist, of course there is no one answer to what constitutes good tone. Of course nobody knows for sure.

However, luthiers may also want to consider that this endless complexity is precisely why most bass players enter into a lifelong search for their perfect instrument and 'holy grail' of tone, so the very questions that irritate them so much are also the questions that drive their customers to seek their services. Opinions are what your bass building business is based on.

But then what do I know, I've only been playing for 40 years and I've only scratch built two mediocre instruments and many parts basses in all that time, so according to some I have no right to be here at all, let alone have the temerity to express an opinion on a discussion forum.

Maybe there should just be a "Tone Corner" seperate from all the other areas. Then the mods could just move the threads to the appropriate "Tone Corner"
