Show me your compact pedalboard setup

I had an MXR M80 at the end of my board, but haven’t been needing the DI lately and was mostly just using it as a distortion stompbox. So, I got a better one. :) Really liking the Hot Wax so far.

Anyone else use simple strips of Velcro on the underside for cable maintenance?

Is the Visegrip just a Studio Bass in a different package?? Controls seem to be identical

Yeah, Vise Grip was marketed to guitarists. The only real difference I’m aware of is the frequency boost selector switch. On the Studio Bass it’s low/mid, and on Vise Grip it’s high/mid. I just leave that off anyway. The Ovnilabs compressor reviews page has some info about it. It works for me!

The latest iteration of my "two pedals, a medium PT Booster, and a Quilter BB800" concept: Union Tube & Transistor Lab compressor and Broughton Studio One preamp/DI. The goal is "thick, warm, mostly clean, sits well in the mix" like a studio channel strip. I'm running XLR out, bypassing the preamp section of the BB800 head.

So you are taking the XLR Out from the S1 in to the Line In on the back of the BB800?

Correct. XLR out from S1 into rear-panel Line In on the Quilter. I haven't tested it yet at rock and roll volumes, whether the S1 will have enough gain to drive the BB800's power amp. Specifically the reason I had it wired that way was because I just got the Lab in the mail today, and wanted to put it through its paces without the BB800's limiter in the signal path, coloring my listening. Generally speaking though, I do like the BB80's preamp; I'm not knocking it at all. At a gig, I would probably go from the S1's 1/4" out to the BB800's Active 1/4" in. That way, I could send the S1's DI to the console, and use the Quilter's preamp to make additional stage volume and EQ adjustments that wouldn't be heard in front-of-house (one of the most frequent criticisms of the BB800).

I'll tell ya, though: underrated feature of the Union Lab? Roll off the compression, and you can use the makeup gain as a gorgeous-sounding clean boost, up to +30db. I had to be careful not to clip the input stage of the Studio One. My first impression of the Lab is that it's simple yet powerful. It's got a ton of clean headroom and didn't flinch when I subjected it to some aggressive slap & pop. It's just one of those rare pedals that sounds good at every setting.

I've also got a JHS Pulp & Peel on the way for some A/B/C testing with the Lab and my Accountant.

After a little more testing, I wanted to follow up on this: It seems to me that the Studio One is not as powerful at driving a power amp through an XLR cable, as compared to the Messenger or P-15.

This is corroborated by the Broughton website, which claims +20db gain for the Studio One vs. +30db (plus additional +15db boost) for the Messenger.

I also had a chance to try the Studio One's 1/4" output into the Active instrument 1/4" on the front panel of the BB800. As expected, it sounded excellent. The Quilter preamp adds an extra layer of subtle compression and tone sweetening. When I do my compressor testing next week, I will include the Quilter's built-in compression in the mix, to answer the question: How does the BB800's internal compressor stack up against a dedicated compressor pedal?

I am currently driving a power amp w xlr out of studio one. While less powerful than some others that have more gain, it can still be done.

I like this...never seen or thought of, yet I use carpet side of industrial velcro under my boards for pedal and power supply holding. Thanks for sharing your ingenuity.

I have some dumb questions for you folks (making my first pedalboard, a pedaltrain metro 20):

-Velcro or dual lock or a combo of both?
-cable ties or bolt my power supply (1Spot Cs6) directly to the board?
-for a compact board should I be thinking soldered vs solderless, or should that not be so much of a concern at this size?

My personal preference is Dual Lock. I also use Dual Lock to affix my power supplies under my pedal boards
