Show me your compact pedalboard setup

Latest iteration. Actually not as messy as it looks here. All mounted on a nice SoCal Pedalboard (Login • Instagram) with a T-Rex fuel tank. The order is: Modded Hoof Clone>Super Russian>Spectrum>Carbon Copy>Diamond Bass Comp>Tuner. I'm getting a great Envelope Phaser and Octave out of the Spectrum right now. Works great and I have the midi controller, but I'm not sure where to fit it in.

Modded? Howso?

Added a Darkglass Microtubes X Ultra as my bass preamp and DI.

The Ampli-Firebox is used for guitar, and on rare occasions for adding a "fake guitar" to my bass playing. I run a separate path with an octave and another fifth up (basically faking a power chord an octave above my bass line), and run that through the guitar modeler and going direct out to a powered speaker and/or the mixer.

Modded? Howso?

I posted this in another thread: Any DIY pedal builders on TB? Strut your stuff!

I've been on a bit of a muff quest the past few months with bass and have finally figured a few things out. I recently socketed a lot of components and a madbean board and built an "ultimate" muff that works pretty well as a boost, dirty boost, slight overdrive, and fuzz. I call it the Gold Muff and it's a mix of Green, Civil War, and Ram's head in a gold enclosure. The diodes are switchable from silicon/none/led in both sections and there is a tone wicker footswitch. I like it for what what it is and for the fact that I can play around with the clipping for a while to see what I like and if I actually use the options in a real band setting.

I realized, thought, that I want a dedicated "fuzz" muff on my board. For that purpose, I liked the sound of LEDs in the clipping diode sections on the Gold Muff for real Fuzz. I thought that perhaps an Ungula/Pedalpcb Hoof clone would fit that bill. I don't have a lot of time right now, so I just bought a built one off of Reverb. It "kinda" did the trick, but I felt like it wasn't letting enough low end through and as a result wasn't thick enough. Also, the clipping was more on the top end and not as full frequency as I think bass needs. Also, the builder didn't use germanium transistors (which I happened to have one hand). So, I applied some of the same component values that worked on my Gold Muff-- basically replaced the 100n coupling caps with 220n caps and the 100n clipping caps with 47n caps.

And, of course, while I didn't have time to build an Ungula/Hoof, by the time I did these mods and fixed the broken traces and pads from component removal... it took just as long as making one from scratch!

Sounds really good, thick, and fuzzy but not fizzy. Liking it a lot so far. I can post pics, but there's not that much to see!

That’s awesome. I love big muffs. I think the reason I have the hardest time deciding on which one is THE one is because I like certain aspects of a lot of them.

I’ve been using a Hoof on guitar lately, with mids cranked and all other knobs at noon and it’s fantastic. Articulate and punchy, good note definition. Sounds somewhere between fuzz and distortion. It’s not great on bass as I think it shelves too much low end though.

I’d be super interested in a pedal like you’ve described. As much as I’m a set-it-and-forget-it kinda guy I like different flavors of muff enough to spin some knobs. I’ve been eyeing Electrofoods Oprichniki or maaaaybe BSRI.

Ideally something that allows low end content to be tightened up or boosted, mid control is a must, clipping options would be really cool (op amp or transistors?!), top jacks and reasonable sized enclosure would be icing on the cake. I’m not sure if such a thing exists though.

Yeah, I had to build my own to get exactly what I wanted. Plus, it was pretty instructive to socket everything and then build with my ears rather than hype and numbers from online. I have come to the conclusion that it's nice to have different flavors on your board.

I don't think my modded hoof shelves too much low end. So, success there. And I like the combo of germanium transistors and LEDs. That gives a nice fuzz sound that is extremely punchy.

I also still really like the W&C Super Russian. The flat mids are enough and there's no need for a blend.

Also need to say, though, that I wasn't loving my Benson preamp clone before, but now that I realize that I want a dedicated fuzz slot, it's making more sense. I don't love it as a general boost, but I do like it as an OD/Fuzz.

Dear compact-pedal-board-heads -- what's your recommendation for the best do-it-all mod pedal that doesn't take up a ton of space? Thinking of a EHX Mod11 or something of that size for at least chorus and phase with other stuff like trem and flange being nice-to-have.

for synth, envelope, phase, and octave, the SA Spectrum is hard to beat.

Thanks @deepestend I've got one of those on my other board and love it! Mainly seems like an envelop to me; do you use their editor to get those other functions or is it just a matter of turning wheels?

@Bioflava the easiest way to do this is to use the app on your phone. There’s a whole community collection of patches where people have done the work for you. You can take their sounds and then tweak them to how you like them. Use them to build new sounds too. I’m currently running a phaser, an envelope, and a simple octave.

All this talk of Phasor's, Filters and Octaves.....
Thought I better post the latest updates to my little Metro 16
All powered by Cioks DC7 with a passive HPF (first in line) set at 30hz under there too.
This then feeds into a Mesa D800+ Preamp with variable HPF

I can feel the burn of that blue MDB2 LED even through the photo. That thing could guide a landing plane  I really need a damper for mine.

Very nice clean board, looks awesome!

thanks! The Cioks fit perfectly underneath. I attached it with two zip ties and it feels sturdy

last week I thought my Grey Stache was broken because the LED was soo weak compared to the MBD-2.

yes I know, but it’s a cool pedal, I wouldn’t mind two of them I like it so much. ATM it’s set really mild but activate the 20db switch and it raises its ugly head, It could replace the TAFM:woot:

The Southampton utility knife has all four of those effects in a pedalboard-friendly format.

Thanks @Smurf-o-Deth -- looks like they're sold out and none available on Reverb... but *that* is basically what I'm looking for.

Tacking back to the SA stuff, @deepestend or anyone who knows about these boxes: I've watched some Neuro videos on YT and it's pretty impressive! One question I can't figure out: is it possible to upload, let's say, a chorus preset to the Spectrum? Or are you limited by each pedal to certain types of effects? Seems like, since these things are all computers, that SA could make one pedal to rule them all, but from a financial perspective I see the appeal :)

PS: Has anyone every played bass through one of these EHX Mod11s? I can't seem to find any YT videos on them.

Thanks for all the help here folks!
