Learned this line from an IMA SM post; fun line; curious what it sounded like on each bass. Figured, might as well see what they sound like recorded. I've been working hard to get things to sound good, through amps, recording, pedals...anything. I've been mostly disappointed; I guess that's why its a chase. This one is no different, but the work is done.

The one laying on the floor on its side is a [lined] fretless acoustic bass. Unfortunately, I’m not really playing it these days, but I’ve gotten a lot of enjoyment out of it (in phases) over the years. It’s pretty cool for Pentagle-esque jamming, though I don’t have a suitable partner(s) for such things these days.

And also, wow, good insight on your part to perceive that someone with such a heard would have at least a bit of a fretless side to him!

Could you compare and contrast those? I love to have a double split P someday (seems like I might have to build my own) and those are interesting in that they have the same neck pickup position, but different bridge positions. Wondering which one works the best and why.

Sorry for my delay. @atquinn I must confess I am terrible at describing tone, but let me give it a shot.

The bass on the far right, I have had since 1988. It was my number one for 30 years! I had never played another bass that sounded as full or punchy, until 2018. All of my basses have Active EMG pickups, maybe that explains it? I first saw the pickup configuration on the other (2) basses on an Alien Audio bass, and thought "Oh, thats cool!" When I came across a P Bass body with that setup, I HAD to try it. Threw on a Warmoth neck and was hooked. That bass looked like a science experiment because it had so many carve outs, cuts, dings and ugly routs...so I built the black one and instantly knew it was THE setup for me.

Full and punchy yes, but more round and warmer sounding. Even across all the strings, like I had found something that I never knew was missing. I could not believe that my beloved #1 was being out done, but it was somehow. I built the bass on the far left in 2022 to be a backup for my new #1 and have since added a tone knob to replicate it even more. I still love my old #1, but shes more for rehearsal these days.

It could be a wood thing I suppose? Left and right are both Swamp Ash, and the center bass is Black Korina. I prefer the pickup spacing on the black bass also, its about 1/2" between the 2 P Bass pickups. I hope that helps. I would encourage you to play around with options, but for me...P/Reversed P is the configuration of thunder!
