I got one of the good ones. It played like a dream after the LaBella flats went on it...why change?

meticulously set up by me years ago with a proper bridge fitting, fret level, and labella flatwould strings.
this thing really does rock. it's easy to play, and sounds fantastic. i actually prefer it to a somewhat expensive hofner version that one of my students has.

I know I need to show a picture, but I got a Squier Affinity J, all stock. I only took the PG off, and put new strings on if you count those as modifications.
$900 bass, bought it for $425.
Under 8 pounds.
Rare color.
Better than new, better than many jazz basses I've ever played, so no need to mod.

Harley Benton HBZ-2005 @ £249 and - although this maybe pushing it a bit - Retrovibe R32 'Telenbacker' @£400.
Neither modded excepting the strings on the HB and nothing on the RV. I've 3 others even cheaper but I've modded them. Both play beautifully.

Not planning on modding this otherwise excellent Hofner.

A G&L tribute posted on their online store as B-stock for less than half what they normally go for.
I know this doesn't fit with the spirit of this thread but it was cheap at $350 US so I guess it qualifies.

Ignition Club? I picked one of those up for £250. Really nice basses. But it doesn't qualify because previous owner installed Grover tuners and I've cut a new bone nut, because the plastic one could not be made functional. The OEM ones are hollow(!) plastic and when I tried to adjust the slots I went through to the void before reaching the right depth. And I blasphemed and changed the guard to tort.
But it qualifies as cheap because it came with a Hofner bag and a set of LaBella tapes. Those things coupled with the Grover tuners means the bass itself, at least in my head, was only £150. What a bargain!

Recently donated it to a church building fund. When I got it it had a uniform coat of gunk on it, but I got it for $100 so I took it, and this is it after a good scrubbing. I replaced the pots because one didn’t work so I just went ahead and replaced them all.
This is a Highway 1 I got on sale for less than $400. Except for strings it’s box stock.

Depends on your threshold for 'cheap', but if we're talking under $1k, then almost all of my basses (even my Lakland -01 series basses) qualify as 'cheapies' and are un-modded. The only exception is my SX (Essex) SJB-75 Jazz Bass: I installed a high-mass bridge right after I got it in 2009. The only bass I own that is/was over $1k at the time of purchase was my Lakland 44-02 Deluxe. No need to mod that either!
Ah that model was my first bass, same color scheme and all. Let me know if you ever wanna sell it.
Both SUBs are stock. 4 string was $250.00 new and the 5 was $170.00 used.
My ponies. Used Squier Bronco from Craigslist for $100, acquired to be a proof of concept before the purchase of a not-so-cheapie JMJ Mustang. I enjoy them both.
