I'm not a networking expert, but when we built an addition on our home, my teenage son (who's pretty good at it) insisted that we run Cat6 instead of Cat5. If you haven't purchased wire yet, it might we worth considering.
It's always interesting seeing Romex since I live in the land where even residential wiring runs in conduit!
I'm considering Cat6... shielded cat6 is about 2x the $$$ of the stuff I'm looking to order. I'm looking at 250' spools.
No conduit here... the inspector is happy enough that I've updated most all of the oil/cloth coated, non grounded existing circuits left over from the 40s when the house was built
I've been buying cabling there for years. For the price, you just can't beat it. (And no, I'm not affiliated with them at all...it's just something that my geeky audiophile friends turned me on to some years back).
