I'm considering Cat6... shielded cat6 is about 2x the $$$ of the stuff I'm looking to order. I'm looking at 250' spools.

No conduit here... the inspector is happy enough that I've updated most all of the oil/cloth coated, non grounded existing circuits left over from the 40s when the house was built ;)

I think your son made a good call on Cat6 cable. Note that I work professionally in the networking and communications field.

If it were me doing the installation in my own home, I'd consider both speed/crosstalk characteristics, as well as fire safety. I'd go with plenum rated Cat6 cable. Don't forget to leave a strand or two of pull tape in the conduit/cavity for future cable upgrades and/or additions. If possible, eliminate sharp turns in the path before you pull the cable in. Also, don't run the data cables right next to power cables in the wall.

+1 on the Cat6. Gig Ethernet switches are dirt cheap these days. Incidentally, hands-down the best place to source cabling (of all kinds) is Monoprice.

As I'm likely to say, friends don't let friends buy anything with Monster written on it. :spit: I've been buying cabling there for years. For the price, you just can't beat it. (And no, I'm not affiliated with them at all...it's just something that my geeky audiophile friends turned me on to some years back).

That has been one of my main concerns... this wall being doubled made it a little easier. Power comes from the top right of the outer layer an then straight out into the inner layer in position for the boxes. The network run comes from the top left into the inner layer and runs to the floor and over. I tried to not have them intersect any closer than 10th to 12". I am pulling coax with the network cable (4 runs total). Two of the rooms will have small switches as the wife and I both have 2 or more computers in our offices.

Yikes! Then go for Cat5e if possible. Your installation may not require shielding unless your cable run goes outside or is in close proximity to noisy sources (power, TV antenna, etc). Take some drawings with you and talk to your supplier and/or inspector about the advantages and disadvantages to using shielded cable. They'll know more about this subject.

Bummer about not having conduit.

Whatever you get, try to get it in the plenum rated variety. Fire safety would be the most important thing in my mind in situations where cable is in direct contact with drywall, wood, and insulation.

James, Save your $$. You don't need shielded Cat6, and you don't need a plenum rated cable. Just a CL2/3, in wall rated cable will do.
If you haven't already, spend a little extra for quad shield RG6 coax.

It's a little tight for a 5 piece hard rock band, but it gets the job done. (2 guitar amps are hiding left and right out of frame)

Figure the length of the run. Not just point A to point B, but 2'+ at the jack for termination, and whatever is needed at your distribution hub.

I don't know if Home Depot and the likes carry Cat6. You can locate a custom A/V installer or phone/data tech in your area and purchase wire from them. I know if someone called me asking to purchase wire, I'd be happy to sell it. I have many coils of Cat6, but not sure of their lengths.

Thanks for all the advice... it's helped :D

I was working on other rooms, but got some more done in the music room in between.

Here is my future "guitar wall" I scored a bunch on Hercules 'pegboard' hangers for $6 a piece from a crazy Amazon sell off... so I made a 6' x 2' pegboard area.
