Haha I hear you on the MK making all the other basses feel "not as good". I find it hard to play any of my other basses as well!

I played my F Bass VF-6 for a gig a few weeks ago because I felt that the tone would fit better in the music being played (it was a gospel set). I was right about the tone but man, it didn't feel as good as the MK. The F Bass is a GREAT bass and I do really like the ergonomics. But it is (to me) NOTHING like my MK!

Hey my friend! The show has been a blast, and I get to play with the most wonderful people each day…very grateful!

I totally hear you. The Yamaha (great playing and sounding bass) just feels too big and awkward…the neck in seated position feels like it’s too far away…definitely makes me appreciate my MK headless every day when I pick it up to practice..everything is immediately where it should be…just a brilliant design

I love going back to see some of Martin’s basses from the past. I want them all of course…hahaha!

Hey all! I tried some custom LaCompte dual coils in my headless and prefer the BigRigs. If anyone has a 6 string with 165.mm spacing, or has a build they could use them for, definitely consider these. They’re the same wind that Trickfish will be offering, but custom made for 6 string.

Whelp…..this is what happens when I complain enough to my friend Martin Keith about my 5 string bass….new bass in the queue…still need to decide on pickups…but otherwise just a simple alder/maple/pau ferro combo..but with more narrow string spacing and a 33” scale. Martin makes the best medium scale basses with a low B. Really amazing. The top is one I sent to him a while back. Port Orford Cedar. Beautiful and not too over the top. Really excited!

I've been using a Yamaha BB 5 string. I love most everything about it, but I mostly play it sitting down...and it's a terrible design (for me) for that. Very uncomfortable. Have been struggling with it so much that I recently bought an early 2000s History bass...really amazing Japanese build quality. Along the way I've been talking to Martin, and we came up with this. It's a solid alder body, a port orford cedar top, an old hybrid spruce/maple neck blank that was a mistake cut long ago...and now perfect for a 33" scale 5, and a pau ferro board. It's getting cut for soapbars...but no idea what it'll end up with. I was going to go active, but I always prefer passive, and with an outboard pre if needed. I love PJ pickups....but have been struggling with them with cans/in ears for some reason...so figured I'd keep it simple with soaps. 17mm string spacing. Will be headed. With the playability of Martin's basses, Will be super excited to have a super comfy 5 from Martin on more traditional gigs where my 6 isn't the right tool.

I might possibly be getting a headless MK in the not-too-distant future.

I'm wondering how easy it is to change the strings on the headless basses. I recently tried to change strings on an Ibanez headless and it was far too difficult for my taste. Are all headless basses that can use regular strings similarly difficult to restring? Or does high-quality hardware make it a much easier experience?
